Description: The AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 200-400mm f/4G IF-ED features a super telephoto zoom reach with the advantages of Vibration Reduction for increased photographic opportunities in low light.

The Vibration Reduction system offers up to three stops slower shutter speeds either in Normal Mode for hand held shooting or Active Mode when shooting from a moving platform. The VR system can also detect panning movement.

The optical design includes 24 glass elements in 17 groups manufactured to the latest environmental standards. No less than four ED glass elements ensure sharp, high contrast results with film or digital. The picture angle is equivalent to 135 format focal lengths of 300mm to 600mm when used with a Nikon DX format Digital SLR, fast and quiet auto focus enabled by the incorporation of a Silent Wave Motor (SWM).

The f/4 Maximum aperture and overall length remain constant at all focal lengths and focus distances and a new ‘Memory Set’ button close to the camera body facilitates instant one touch focus re-set.

Lens Construction 24 elements in 17 groups
Closest Focusing 2 m
Filter Attachment Size 52mm
Hood HB-30 (supplied)
Weight 3200g
Dia. x Length (mm) 124 x 358

Pros: Sharpness, versatility
Cons: Cost, weight, cost, cost, cost.

Though a bit weighty in heft an dcost, this lens overcomes those aspects in its amazing performance. Quiet and fast focus is matched to amazingly sharp results. A fabulous lens for nature photography as well as sports applications. Mated to the D70 and D200, it\'s hard to beat

Pros: Sharpness, Contrast and Teleconverter compatibility
Cons: Weight

Excellent build quality and performance. AF-S focus is very fast and quiet. TC14E works well as do other TC\'s but autofocus slows beyond effective f5.6. Every photo has the Wow factor shot with this lens.

Pros: accurate, fast, silent. excellent bokeh, good VR
Cons: none

I bought this (expensive) lens only recently but after almost 5.000 shots I think I can tell a bit more about the lens.

It is a great beast and easy to work with. It weighs about 3.2 kg and could be handheld as well due to the excellent VR. To be honest I should buy a tripod or good monopod to work with it, but I am simple not a tripod lover and I can handle this thing easily. My 70-200VR lens seems a toy after using the heavier 200-400/4 VR for a long time.

The colorrendering as well as bokeh are wonderfull. Even in low contrast situations the lens produces high quality images.

I am very pleased with it and would recommend this one to everyone (budget permitting ofcourse)

I also used the lens with the 1.4 as well as the 1.7 converter. Not too happy with 1.7 under lower light circumstances and the lens is somewhat slower with the 1.4 converter, but I mostly use the lens with the 1.4 converter to be honest.
