Pros
  • The quality of the video footage is incredible
Cons
  • I would have love to have seen a "making of" feature added
I bought this DVD for my husband for Christmas and we have only recently found time to watch it. Too be honest both my husband and I are more into birds, but this DVD may just change that.
Firstly, I must confess that we're not expert's when it comes to Mammals. We were very surprised to find that we have so many different species off mammal in Britain. I had no idea we had eighteen species of bat, so many Dolphins and Whales passing through our waters, many of which are resident, and five species of Shrew!! where have we been?
This DVD has really opened my eyes to our mammal species and has taught me so much. It has made my husband and I determined to look for more mammal species when we go out this year.
The video footage is beautiful for every species, I'd love to know how they managed to obtain it all. It really adds a new dimension to actually see each mammal rather than look at a picture in a book. Loads of extra photos and diagrams are included, showing footprints, poo, nests, Bats close up, burrows, etc, etc.
Favourite bits are the boxing hares, the Killer Whales, all of the mice & shrew species and the Stoat being chased by a rabbit.
On my shelf at home we have a DVD guide to British Birds, Butterflies, Dragonflies, Damselflies...and now Mammals.
Highly recommended for anyone interested in British wildlife.

Pros
  • Something New in the field, excellent footage, very well done.
Cons
  • Some captive footage
I received a complimentary copy of the British Mammal Guide DVD from the producers, who I have been helping a little over the last couple of years with advice and some doing some small mammal trapping. I watched the two DVD set over the Christmas period and will offer my thoughts on it. The cinematography is well done with nice footage of 79 British mammal species the total running time is almost 3 hours. Most of the footage is taken in the British isles of wild animals but doing this for all species such as wildcat is very difficult and some footage was filmed in captive collections. This does not detract from the overall feel of the DVD and some of the species would be almost impossible to film in the wild. The factual content is very good and well narrated and there are only a couple of very minor errors and omissions. Overall this DVD is very well done, has some nice footage and information. It is well worth adding to the DVD collection and there is nothing else on the market so this is a pioneering DVD.
