Pentax AD 8x25 WP

Compact Pocket Pentax 8x25
Manufacturer
Ricoh

Item details

Designed for the nature-enthusiast who wants to pack light without sacrificing image quality, the Pentax 8x25 AD WP Compact Binocular delivers bright clear images while weighing in at just 10.6 ounces. The BAK4 roof prisms are phase-corrected to improve image contrast and enhance colour rendition. All of the optics are anti-reflection fully multicoated to maximize light transmission to produce the brightest views possible.

An asymmetrical hinge design enables the binocular to be folded up much smaller than typical centre-hinged optics. In order to cut weight, the housing is made of corrosion and impact-resistant fibreglass reinforced polycarbonate polymer. The material is also temperature-resistant allowing for its use in extreme climates while reducing expansion and contraction wide temperature swings can cause which can make the optical components move out of collimation over time. Its optical tubes are nitrogen-filled and O-ring sealed so they can are submersible to 3.3', as well as fogproof in all weather conditions.

Pros
  • Excellent value, good ergonomics, good performance
Cons
  • none, considering the price point
I recently purchased a pair of the Pentax AD 8x25 WP without any need for owning them. A few days prior to buying these, I received a pair of Swarovski 10x25 CL Pocket binoculars as a gift. I happened to wander into a store and come across the Pentax, while looking for a cheap pair of binoculars for my 2 year old daughter. I was taken back at the design similarities of the Swaro and Pentax.

After testing them out, I was pleasantly surprised with the performance. They provided a nice clear image, with a good focus knob. When comparing them to the Swarovski, these are brighter (keeping in mind that the exit pupil is larger). However, the resolution, while good, is not to the level of the Swarovski.

So, I decided to buy these and plan to give them to my daughter to use.

At the end of the day, I have to consider that these cost a tad over $100 CAD, while the Swarovski costs $1000 CAD. I would not hesitate to purchase them again.
