I had a Sparrowhawk in the garden take a rat. It drowned it in the pond then dragged it onto the lawn and eat most of it.Not something you see everyday.
I posted a photo of it on this forum years...

Saw dead one on the road next to river Exe a few years ago, much larger than those in photo. River Severn is good for them, never seen albino variety.

Yes there is a way. If a hawk plucks the feathers the will be a kink in each of them near the end of the shaft.

The bill does look a bit long but it was very yellow.

I had a suprise when I saw a Sparrowhawk floating on our pond drowning a Rat !!
Dragged it out the pond and ripped it to bits !!
I did post a thread , with photo ,on Bird Forum...it's there some...
