    Costa Rica on a budget

Hello all. I’m just looking for some advice on a possible future trip to Costa Rica. I don’t want to cover various places I just want to find a lodge that I can stay at for around a week or so. I’m not bothered about building up a huge trip list. I would just go birding around the lodge or...

    Texas Rio Grande November

Thinking of planning a trip to south east Texas this November for a weeks birding. Can anyone recommend a hotel to stay at in the McAllen or Harlingen area that I can base myself at and is therefore easy to reach the birding sites from? Perhaps there is another town that would be a better base?

    Florida hotel for birdwatching?

Here’s a question for anyone on the board from Florida or people who have holidayed there. I am considering a trip there next month however I do not want to drive while I’m there so therefore can anyone recommend a hotel where I can get myself some great birding from within a mile or two of the...

    Butterfly ID Singapore

There were many more gorgeous butterflies on my recent trip there last month but they were all very flighty and I couldn't get many pics. I managed to ID one or two but any help with these would be much appreciated thanks.

    Lizard ID Singapore

The first lizard was tiny. Only around two inches long. Suspect the second is Changeable Lizard? The fourth obviously a Gecko but which one?

    Singapore 22/10/2017-30/10/2017

My Gambia trip last year had wetted my appetite for seeing more of the world's kingfishers so the next step for me was to try and add some of the gorgeous members of that family from Asia to my list. Having had a tour to Goa cancelled a few years back I didnt want to risk booking another tour...

    Raptor, Singapore

Saw this in the mangrove forest at Pasir Ris park. Probably a female Japanese Sparrowhawk but did appear to be very large for a Sparrowhawk. Also, although it doesn't show in the photo, the bird had a small crest.

    Panti forest Malaysia

I've booked a trip to Singapore in October this year staying at Changi village. I plan to bird the islands hotspots most of which appear to be easily reached by public transport or taxis. However, I would love to visit Panti forest reserve just over the bridge into Malaysia. I've heard hiring a...

    Singapore bird guide?

Hello all. I'm off for a weeks birding in Singapore at the end of October this year. I plan to bird myself most of the time as it seems easy enough to get around. However I'll be looking for a guide for maybe a couple of trips to find the rarer kingfishers and a day out to Malaysia to that...

Birds you've seen from your hotel room

Well we've got threads for bedroom window ticks and birds seen at work so I thought why not one from our holidays. Now I know some birders will book a holiday just because they know they will get some great birding just from the view from their holiday cottage or hotel, and after all, why...

Footsteps in the Gambia - November 2016

This is a quick report of a weeks trip to the Gambia from 3/11/16 to 10/11/16. There are many reports from this popular destination on this forum both in this section and in the Gambia thread so I won't dwell too much on all the general info about the country suffice to say that post brexit the...

    Nightjars in the New Forest

Early next week I will be spending the day birding sites in and around the New Forest. I'm planning on looking for Nightjars to round off the day. Can anyone advise me on the best spot to find them in that area? In addition have there been any hotspots for Honey Buzzard in the New Forest in...

    Spanish Pyrenees & Steppes 28/2/2016-4/3/2016

This is a quick report of my first bird trip with a birding company that I recently completed. The company was Oriole Birding and they were certainly a great choice. More about them later. Day One Met up with our small group of five plus our guide Ashley for the flight from Gatwick to...

    Gambia Bird Guide

Having had two bird tours to Gambia cancelled due to lack of numbers in 2014 and 2015 I have decided this year not to risk booking another tour. Therefore I have booked a package deal at the Bakotu hotel in early November this year for a solo trip. However it is obvious that to get the best out...

    Costa Rica in June

Am thinking of booking a package deal in Guanacaste Costa Rica in June. Does anyone have any experience/advice on birding there at this time of the year? Does the rainy season make it a bit of a washout or is the rain not too much of a problem. I've read reports that say it only rains for short...

    Grovelands park Firecrests

I note on the London bird club website that Firecrests are often reported from this site. The park is very local to me but I've only ever seen Goldcrests there. I wondered if anyone on here birds the park and knows what part is the best spot for Firecrests?

    Kingfisher field trip

My favourite bird family is the Kingfishers. If I can afford to I would love to see as many different species as possible, although not necessarily just to add them to a list, but to study and photo and compare the different types. For this purpose I booked two guided tours with Birdfinders. One...

    Alternative Birds-of-Paradise

It is generally regarded in our hobby that the Birds-of-Paradise of Papau New Guinea are amongst the most beautiful birds in the world and highly desired by birders who are fortunate enough to travel and aquire extensive life lists. However I'm guessing that a large proportion of people reading...

    Binocular shop London

Can anyone recommend a shop either in or close to (within 50 miles) London where I can try a good range of bins before I buy? I know there are some great shops out there but none of them seem to be anywhere near the capital.

    Lesvos without a car

I've just booked a week in Skala Kalloni between 9th and 16th May. As I drive for a living I really would like a week off from getting behind the wheel. So my question is would I still have a great weeks birding by just sticking around the Kalloni area and say walking 2 or 3 km a day? My target...
