    Colour ringed Curlew

Hi, I found a Curlew a few weeks back in South Wales with green over yellow on the left tibia, and green (or could it be metal?) over red on the right tibia. See photo attached. I've checked cr birding and done a general search of the internet but can't find any matching schemes. Hopefully...

    Cretzschmar's or Ortolan, Turkey

Small flock of these birds seen in SW Turkey, but no males! Pic one looks more like an Ortolan to me with it lacking any rusty red tones in the wing and rump. It also has quite a hefty looking beak. I think the left hand bird in pic two looks more like a Cretzschmar's with the white eye ring...

Milk bottle top adapter (Nikon P330 to Swarovski 25-50X)

I've recently replaced my aged 10 year old coolpix with the Nikon P330 (which is a HUGE improvement!), so I've had to make a new adapter. My last one was made out of a savlon spray bottle top, however I had to carry it separately from the eyepiece and the camera, and there was always a danger of...

Late Lesser Whitethroats - SW England

Hello, I saw a Lesser Whitethroat on the 14th November in Plymouth, and since then I’ve been seeing quite a few more sightings of them on birdguides across the South West, the latest being today (24th November). Is this usual for there to be so many so late? and why might this be happening...

    Which 10x42 binocular ~ £500 - £800

Hello, I'm looking into upgrading from my old Opticron Countryman MC T porro prisms which I have had for 8 years (it’s about time!) as a big reward for finishing my A-levels. I want to stay at 10x42 as I have got on well with my 10x42 MC Ts. My budget is about £500 - £800. The binoculars...

HR or HDF fixed eyepiece for gs 52 ed?

Hi, I am thinking of buying the Opticron gs 52 ed, but I am having a dilemma on which eyepiece to buy. I am thinking of buying the HR (40931) eyepiece at £57 that delivers 20x, or the HDF (40858) eyepiece at £169 that delivers 24x on this scope. The HDF has a smaller field of view at 2.81...

Spotting scope rotating collar and image orientation?

Hi, I see that most spotting scopes allow you to rotate half the scope around to make 45 degree angled spotting scopes more comfortable to use in various situations (eg. in hides or in a car). When the scope collar is rotated, is the orientation of the image corrected as you view from the side...

    Tripod head with a Monopod?

Hello, I am thinking of getting a small spotting scope to take out on walks. I am thinking of using a monopod as it is light and easy to carry, with a mag of around 20X. Would I need a tripod head or ball and socket head, or is it not essential to have one? If it is important, what sort of...

    First digiscope attemt

Hello, This morning I saw a Buzzard in a tree about 200 metres away so I decided to get my astronomy reflector telescope out and try to digiscope it. Im quite pleased with it. I must mention that it was with a compact digi cam and was hand held. I look forward to your thoughts as to how to take...

    Peregrine attack

Just been out for a blustery walk along the coast. I saw a some peregrines, one male and one female. Id never seen the two together in flight before. The size difference is almost unbelievable. A little bit further along on my walk, I saw a common buzzard. I was looking at it in my bins and...

    Which birds fly in formation?

Hello, After seeing a large flock of white birds flying in formation in the south of France on the beach (didn’t have my bins with me so no ID), it got me wondering, apart from the obvious (eg. geese), which birds use formation flying to save energy on long flights?

Help with a few eagles, France

Hello, Hopefully someone will be able to help me with these two eagles. All eagles seen in the wooded mountains of SSW France. 1. A large dark brown eagle, with golden plumage at the front on the upper wing (I think coverts is the right word). It had a little white speckling on the under wing...

Kestrel or Hobby, aerial bat attack?

Hello. I am staying in a small village in south west France. I have noticed a family of Kestrels living on the outskirts of the village. About 10 mins after sunset I was eating a meal in a courtyard when a falcon flew low over and caught a bat. I only caught a glimpse of it for about a second so...

    Lots of Vultures, South France

I was just being driven back to my holiday home from Sete, SW of Montpellier on the motorway. I suddenly saw, just to the side of the road, a large flock of circling birds. I had not expected to see vultures in a relatively flat part of the country. I could see about 15 Griffons and when I took...

    exotic looking bird, France

Hello, I was on a drive through the montagne d'alaric in south west France and I saw a strange looking bird. There were two of them sitting on phone lines. Both looked the same. Had a similar shape and size to a dove with a slender body. In flight its wing beats seemed similar to a wood peckers...
