Bird with powder blue belly brown wings and head in CNY feeder today 04_24_24.

Perhaps an immature male Indigo Bunting or Blue Grosbeak that's not quite in breeding plumage yet?

    Garden / Yard List 2024

Last night under heavy migration and a nearly full moon, I enjoyed watching birds drift past the moon. Off in the distance, the first 74. Lesser Nighthawk of the year sounded off. Today was a great day, with multiple additions, good variety and numbers, and some unusual happenings. The...

SW Florida USA - which swallow?

Ah, I see what you mean. To me, the same hue is on the bird's right wing, perhaps a product of low light photography.

SW Florida USA - which swallow?

I'd go for Purple Martin (deep notch in tail, large head, dingy gray underparts).

    SW Florida USA - Hawk(s)

First bird is Cooper's hawk (long head projection, straight wings with very little bulge in secondaries, rounded tail supports ID but is not diagnostic alone). The second bird is trickier, especially with the lighting. The last image (4518) may be most helpful, and I think it's a molting...

Finally as promised, Abert's Towhee pair and one more Townsend's Warbler shot.

Hybrid hummingbird? Laguna Vista, TX USA

My best guess is an immature male Ruby-throated, but there could be more to this bird that I'm not picking up on.

    Garden / Yard List 2024

That Abert's Towhee photo will have to wait a bit, as I'm having some trouble uploading photos recently... Today brought three additions to the year list, two of which I'm surprised I didn't have already. 71. Green-tailed Towhee (first spring record for the yard, heard-only) 72. Northern...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

Not a bad day today after decent overnight migration. A flock of 12 White-winged Doves was the largest yet this year, and the 2nd Yellow Warbler of the year flitted through. The undoubted star of the show was a male 70. Townsend's Warbler that ended up visiting the water feature for a few...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

After two amazing days, today cooled off in terms of year additions. As I stepped out this morning, I hoped for at least 2 new species. Sure enough, by the end of the morning 2 new species had appeared! 68. Wilson's Warbler 69. Osprey A couple of migrating White-winged Dove photos below, plus...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

It was hard to top yesterday's new yard bird, but today was excellent. After heavy overnight migration, 48 species showed up. A further 8 year additions have brought the list up in a hurry. The day's total of 402 migrants included the following: White-winged Dove - 22 hummingbird sp. - 2...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

Apparently all it took was for me to hit 50 with Tuesday's Zone-tailed Hawk, and the floodgates opened. With 42 species yesterday, I picked up 9 year additions and one new all-time tick! Yesterday was not outstanding for numbers (maybe 30 migrants), but the variety was so good. New year birds...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

On Tuesday I was pleasantly surprised to catch a 50. Zone-tailed Hawk hiding among the Turkey Vultures. My previous yard records have been in autumn, but it was nice to get it out of the way early this year.

    Garden / Yard List 2024

One addition as I left this morning, with heard-only 49. Brewer's Sparrow I'm way behind on last year's total, having gotten up to 73 species by 7 April last spring!

SW Florida USA - bay waders (long shots)

Willets and a Whimbrel (presumably Hudsonian).

    Garden / Yard List 2024

I'll take your word for it, Richard! Between that and Great Corm, you're striking it rich up there. On the way home yesterday, I marveled at a flock of 200-odd White-faced Ibis migrating past a rainbow through the desert. Multiple flocks were seen dodging rain cells, but by the time I got home...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

I had another near miss last night, when an unearthly screech after dark was most likely a Barn Owl. This would be a new yard bird, but it didn't sound quite right to me and I couldn't place whether it was coming from above or not. I'd like a more classic example for an "official" addition, but...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

Nothing new for me today as I was out and about, but I was told that a waterbird flew north in the afternoon. Oof! So far my grand total for large "waterbirds" all-time is Common Merganser, Sandhill Crane, American White Pelican, Great Egret, and Great Blue Heron. Near misses have included goose...

Richard, your next challenge I guess is to photograph a Grey Heron against one of those striking mountains? That would be so neat!

Stilt Sandpiper or Dunlin? tampa march 24

Thanks to everyone above for some really informative posts(y) I'm still not quite sure it's Stilt Sand after looking again, but I'm much less convinced it's a straightforward Dunlin.

Stilt Sandpiper or Dunlin? tampa march 24

I think relative size and bill shape favor Dunlin.

    Blackbird in California

Tricolored Blackbird tends to have a thinner bill with a pointier tip than Red-winged, often quite noticeable side-by-side. I think this has a chance of being Tricolored, but with the bird so dirty I'm not confident in what I'm seeing on the wings or bill.

    Garden / Yard List 2024

Good migration last night meant that I just had to be out in the yard this morning. It paid off, even though there weren't huge numbers of new migrants. Today's three additions were all clearly arriving species that have been absent since last September. 46. Ash-throated Flycatcher 47. Hooded...

Short tailed or Red tailed hawk dark morph South FL. If it is the red tailed, is it a specific subspecies?

I'd say the plumage looks good for immature Short-tailed. Also, dark morph Red-tailed Hawk is very rarely seen in south Florida, compared to Short-tailed (where many birds are dark).

    Can anyone id this bird?

You've got an Eastern Phoebe, one of the earliest flycatchers to return each spring. It won't really be attracted to a bird feeder, but they do love nesting on human-made structures (eaves of sheds, porch ledges, etc).
