Seeking advice on tripod for Kowa TSN99-A

Hi Derek, I`m in the UK and imported "the birder" tripod from the Audubon shop in the USA, it took me a while and I never see another over here but for a scope only I find it the most stable I`ve ever had. John...

    Lee Thickett (Troubador) - R.I.P.

I too am saddened to hear this news, Lee helped me numerous times through messages and emails. This forum will feel the loss of his wisdom keenly.

8x32 NL Pures vs SF 8x32

I added a 8x32sf to my 8x42sf earlier this year, if you like your 42 then the 32 is pretty much a smaller lighter version with only a minor drop in the image IMO, not quite as good with stray light as the 42. Haven`t had much time with the nl so nothing relevant to write from me.

    EL opinions

I`ve owned several with zero quality issues, the 8.5x is a masterpiece, if you like it when you try it don`t overthink it and let any of us put you off. Brilliant binocular.

    Something new from Zeiss ?

I haven`t tired of the view with my 8x42SF after 4 years, I keep trying everything new when I can of course but nothing else can disguise its size and weight up to the eyes the way the 42SF does IMHO, the ability to hold them comfortably up to the eyes for extended periods (way longer than...

Hello everyone dartford warblers and lesser spotted woodpecker

Hello Tommy I`ve seen Dartford warblers at The Arne RSPB. Only place I`ve seen Lesser spotted woodpecker is Yarner wood on Dartmoor. Welcome to the forum. John.

    My current favourites

Maybe more than once as you`ve previously listed 3 Leicas for sale in the classifieds. ;)

    My current favourites

My ones could do with a service, I was thinking of asking Gary at East coast binocular repair rather than sending them to Leica, not sure of best option.

    My current favourites

I picked up a pair last January, can`t believe how often they go out with me over my SF.

    Garden / Yard List 2023

Just enjoying a coffee looking out the window on the garden only to see a Firecrest moving through the Camelias. First for my garden list.

    Top 5 of 2022

Single Waxwing Sculthorpe Moor last January. Watching a pair of Nightjars fly really close for a good ten minutes in Suffolk in June. Helping some lovely Ladies get their first Dartford Warbler at Dunwich Heath in June. Swallow Tail butterfly at Strumpshaw fen June. A pair of Lesser Yellowlegs...

Annual trip to Devon and Ham Wall

I enjoyed reading your posts Julie, makes me realise how lucky I am to have lived here all my life. If you are this way again may I suggest walking the beginning of Tavy Cleave, in the area around the leat take off from the Tavy there are usually two pair of Whinchats to be seen.

Zeiss SFL 8x40, A Field Review

Pretty sure I`ll never find out :( But hopefully I`ll get to compare the SFL to my own SF. I have high hopes of liking it.

Zeiss SFL 8x40, A Field Review

Not really a similar comparison. Lets say the SF is the SF90 Stradale and the SFL is the 296 GTB.......................

    Binomania Kowa TSN-773 video review

Hi Piergiovanni I really enjoyed your review (and the beautiful Italian scenery), I`ve been using a 773 for some years now and still find it the perfect balance of performance and portability. Cheers. John.

New Zeiss binos 8x40 SFL and 10x40 SFL

Well maybe not in optics but surely everybody is familiar with 4k, or UHD meaning the best resolution widely available for movies and television. Makes sense to me from a marketing perspective, I mean why is an EV Porsche Taycan called a "turbo" ?

New Zeiss binos 8x40 SFL and 10x40 SFL

Zeiss have a huge price gap between the Conquest and SF so this makes sense for many buyers simply not willing to drop the ££$$ for an SF. UHD is a well understood term so probably makes sense to buyers who aren`t optics obsessives.

Finally, I found a pair of Leica BN 8x32's on eBay.

I mean whites were whiter, blacks deeper, I don`t bother with Albino`s to be honest, but the improvement was plain to see.

Finally, I found a pair of Leica BN 8x32's on eBay.

When I picked up mine I compared it to a mint UVHD+, for me the improvement in transmission and dynamic range on the UVHD+ was clearly evident, which is not surprising given the years between them, however the UV was £700 more expensive, and I really wanted the BN, besides my SF is my main optic...

Finally, I found a pair of Leica BN 8x32's on eBay.

I picked up a very serviceable pair back in January 147..... Really enjoying them and still surprisingly capable.

Swarovski NL vs Zeiss SF: a personal comparison of two 8x32s.

You may be correct, but look at the car industry, I find it hard to believe that the best engineers really want to make SUV`S, I like to think if they had their way we`d all be driving something more akin to an M5 or a Caymen.

Swarovski NL vs Zeiss SF: a personal comparison of two 8x32s.

I doubt the optical engineers have much say in what goes to market.

Swarovski NL vs Zeiss SF: a personal comparison of two 8x32s.

Swarovski Optik is interested in market share, and they certainly have it, this is all just my opinion, but to me they make binoculars that really "wow" when first tried in a retail setting, and they are very good at it, many here try out binoculars from the big three and declare the Swarovski`s...

Swarovski NL vs Zeiss SF: a personal comparison of two 8x32s.

How many times have we been here, even in my short decade or so on this forum ? Somebody dismissive of another`s lived experience with a particular optic because it doesn`t correlate with their own.

I am thinking the new 32 mm alphas from Swarovski and Zeiss are the best birding binoculars you can buy right now.

You can`t generalise for most people IMHO, and as much as I enjoy your threads, many of us are not ready to be re-educated as to what would work better for us if only we headed your wisdom. I simply get more from a 5mm ep than a 4.
