Questions about Gannets and their young.

The background to these questions is that I'm staying with my sister in Fife at the moment and a couple of days ago we enjoyed a trip to the Isle of May. The guy on the boat said that a lot of young gannets were so well fed that they were too fat to fly (I wonder if perhaps having wings that...

But is black with red bill and what looks like yellow tip? Have pic, just taken through the dusk, but poker calls - will upload to photobucket later. ETA Tenby North Bay Bemused! David

    Knot sure

Basically I'm not very good. I took the pic below yesterday, and thought it was a knot in winter plumage along with a redshank. However it doesn't look quite right - bill too long. However I see from http://pembsbirds.blogspot.co.uk/ that a long-billed dowitcher has been spotted in the area...

Any advice on what sort of screen res would be best for looking at one's photos?

It suddenly strikes me that the biggest restraint on quality of looking at my images might be screen resolution. The problem is my laptop is only a year old, so I'd be reluctant to upgrade yet, without some sort of windfall anyway. It is 1366 x 768. David

Tripods that can take a camera and scope simultaneously?

I was just talking to someone on the phone who said he thought that was possible, and it would certainly make life easier to have the two on one, in terms of walking to viewpoints and/or swapping over gear onto a single tripod. Anyone know if it is- Possible Any good? Not ludicrously...

Two places where coots have disappeared

Well, there may be the odd one, but I haven't seen any on my recent visits to Pembroke Mill Pond or Bosherston Lily Ponds. Usually a healthy breeding population in both locations, and there were plenty during the winter. I find this rather disquieting - any ideas what is going on? I did a...

Price for 2nd hand Kowa 25*60

I've just replaced my Kowa 25*60 with a new 20-60*80 Celestron. I bought the Kowa with case and tripod (lousy, but still a tripod) on ebay 2nd hand about 10 years ago, and think it was 3 or 4 years old then. The details of this are long lost - had to get new ebay account and email when an old...

    Black and white coot

I have a pic, which I will upload to photobucket sometime, of a coot taken at Bosherston a few days ago. I'm under no illusions about it being some rare and exotic species, but I'd guess between 30 and 40% of its feathers are white. Seen similar things in blackbirds. I am a bit curious to...

Another digiscoping noob - do I even understand my options

OK, so I want to do some digiscoping. I've just bought a Celestron Ultima 80 ED, largely on the basis of things I've read here saying that except at high zoom it pretty much matches scopes costing well into 4 figures. It replaces an old second hand Kowa 25*60, that looking through a friends...
