What binoculars do you think have the most WOW factor!

James - anything that Dennis has stated that you dispute? Sounds like a fairly reasonable evaluation of the compacts.

    Zeiss 7x42 FL size?

Thanks, all very good info. My primary use will be for archery hunting. I just hate having something hanging from my neck while hunting. Also while in my stand I already have my safety harness on. Another harness just is not practical. Looks like I am forced to go the x32 route. I will...

    Zeiss 7x42 FL size?

I currently have a 8x42 EDG and find them to be great bins. But, I am not getting along with their size and weight. I am considering going to a 8x32 format(probably the Ziess) and also considering the Zeiss 7x42. On paper the 7x42 appears to be smaller and lighter than the EDG. The extra...

Halo/ghost image around edges? What am I seeing?

Well I found my answer. I will voluntarily subject myself to public humiliation. It is very cold outside and I was using the bino's looking out the house windows. The windows have a fine screen mesh. Apparently when looking through the mesh, especially at an angle this halo occurs. I walked...

Halo/ghost image around edges? What am I seeing?

When I look at through my Nikon Edg's I am seeing a halo around the edges of the image. For instance, the edge or the outline of a tree trunk has a halo or ghost image on both the right and left side of the trunk. It is just a couple of inches of an outline around the edge of the tree. I am...

    Old Trinovids vs original Ultravid?

Ceasar - can you elaborate on your "reasons of safety" to use a 7x42?

    Old Trinovids vs original Ultravid?

Thx Tex. Your right it might not work they way I hope. But, when in my tree strand I already have my safety harness on and I hate to have things dangling from my neck. Just more stuff that can interfere with the bow string when making a shot. I agree with the recommendation with 8x42, I...

    Old Trinovids vs original Ultravid?

Dennis - Thanks for the offer on the Nikons, but the x32 in the edg's don't appeal to me. For me the only reason I see for getting a x32 is the smaller size. And the Nikon's are nearly as large as the Leica 8x42's. If I get the Nikon's they will be 8x42.

    Old Trinovids vs original Ultravid?

Thanks to everyone for the info. Its a difficult decision for someone like me. Spending this much on binos is hard to justify, but you want the best or close to it. I have narrowed it down to the Leica, Zeiss FL, and Nikon EDG. All can be had used for about the same price on Ebay. They all...

    Old Trinovids vs original Ultravid?

Thx guys very good info. Dennis - you would recommend going that far back in time with Leitz? Seems to me like they would be rather dated. For what it's worth I am farsighted and the main application is hunting and general viewing. The one thing that really appeals to me in the Leica's is...

    Old Trinovids vs original Ultravid?

Just curious, what is everyone's opinion on the original Ultravids vs the older Trinovids? If someone was in the market for a used, older model Leica what would you recommend? Thanks

    Going retro (in a way)

Lots of love here for the Trinovids. Just curious, what is everyone's opinion on the original Ultravids vs the Trinovids? If someone, was in the market for a used Leica what would you recommend? Thanks

    Panorama's release date?

Anyone hear anything on the release date of the Panorama's? Looking forward to seeing how they perform. I was interested in the Primes, but they have had a less than stellar debut.

8x or 10x for low light?

I think you are correct, the key term is twilight. And agree with the "pick your posion" statement made earlier. At some point there is not enough light and the exit pupil size begins to matter most. For astronomy use the exit pupil size would be most critical. This is a quote from...

8x or 10x for low light?

Your right it's not the same thing. But, TW factor says that you will see more image detail with higher magnification if all other things are equal. Twilight Factor = two identical binoculars, an 8x and 10x with same objective size, the 10x will give better image resolution in low light.

8x or 10x for low light?

Roy is saying that the TW theory is rubbish without providing any proof. The TW theory says if a 7x50 and 10x42 are indentical in their construction then the 10x42 will provide better image resolution in low light.

8x or 10x for low light?

I think you have described well the principle of the twilight factor. So in theory, the 10x will perform better than the 8x in low light conditions because it has the higher twilight factor. Think about the extreme of spotting scopes. They have very small exit pupils. But they have large...

8x or 10x for low light?

Thanks for the good info. I used to have a pair of 8x56 Steiners that were like having night vision. But I ultimately sold them. They were too big to carry on a hunt and I seemed to always question the magnification for the longer range viewing. You said that 10x42's can be hard work on...

8x or 10x for low light?

The brightness factor is just another way to express the exit pupil. It is the EP squared. What I am questioning is the twilight factor. Which is another mathematical equation that estimates the performance of resolution in low light conditions. According to the TW principle a 10x will out...

8x or 10x for low light?

I have it narrowed down to three - Zeiss FL T, Nikon EDG, Swaro SLC HD. The Zeiss will most likely win the day. It has the better brightness and can be found at a reasonable price these days. I read a quote somewhere, and I apologize if I have stolen it from someone here, but in regards...

8x or 10x for low light?

Guys, I am hunter and looking for a bino that will give me best performance in low light situations. I enjoy preseason scouting the edges fields and trying to catch a glimpse of the big buck that will only sneak out when it is nearly dark. I want a x42 due to size. I will carry them to my...
