    On a Cumbrian facebook page, someone claims to have heard a cuckoo in Cumbria this week. It seems highly unlikely, especially as all the tagged birds are still in West Africa. Other people are jumping on the thread claiming to have heard one too. They have almost certainly mis-heard a collared...

    I'm sorry, I don't. It was sent to me as a buzzard photo (by a non-birder), so I didn't see it in the field, but just felt that it looked more like an accipiter than a buteo. I hadn't thought of kestrel, I must admit

    Thanks Larry. Yes, it is UK. Someone was questioning the barring, but I think that's within the normal range of variation for Common Buzzard.

    That's always possible, but I think it's genuine. The pic is from a facebook thread, if you want to join in. Whatever - I still think it's a soggy collared dove, which would mean that some attempt at deception would be a bit pointless.
