    Cuckoo in February?

On a Cumbrian facebook page, someone claims to have heard a cuckoo in Cumbria this week. It seems highly unlikely, especially as all the tagged birds are still in West Africa. Other people are jumping on the thread claiming to have heard one too. They have almost certainly mis-heard a collared...

    Any birders in Cockermouth/Bassenthwaite area?

Hi I have a 66 acre wood near Sunderland (the Cumbrian one) with quite a mix of habitats. Would any birders in the area be interested in adopting it as their local patch? I'd be very interested to know just what's there at the moment and how the mix changes over time, with the wildlife-friendly...

Parentage of a hybrid duck, Isle of Wight UK

Parentage of a hybrid duck, Isle of Wight UK (Picture now added!) Hi Any thoughts on the parentage of this duck? It hasn't got the upcurled tail feathers of a mallard but suggestions have been American black duck x mallard, Muscovy x mallard, and it also looks rather like the Swedish blue...

    Snipe drumming in November

A few nights ago (around the time of the super-moon), I distinctly heard a snipe drumming in the middle of the night. It was a very bright moonlit night. I always assumed this was a spring thing but you're probably going to tell me that this is a pretty common thing to hear in autumn/winter!

    Doves killing other birds? UK

On a (non-birding) forum, there is someone convinced that the doves in her garden are killing other birds. I presume she means collared doves. Her evidence is that she has now found a dead blackbird and a dead starling in her garden. Yesterday she heard a lot of noise and saw her two resident...
