First Day out with the Nikon D5

Great set of images Neil. You must be very pleased with your D5. Particularly interested in your 4K video image. What do you use to pull a still image from the 4 K video? Thanks, Rich

Hi Alan, I have both TC's and your combo. You won't notice any difference. It is a great combo.

Swarovski 8x25 CL-P best compact binocular?

I agree RTFM. They are extraordinary and all I use these days. Brighter and sharper than they ought to be with a 25mm objective.

    New 500mm and 600mm FL E Nikkors

Dave, I paid £8000 on day 1 from LCE. It is around the same weight as my 300 f2.8vr and much better balanced. Very easy to hold handheld. I traded in my 500f4vr and my 300f2.8 vr for this lens and so far very happy with it.

    New 500mm and 600mm FL E Nikkors

I think for the weight reduction it is worth it though. Have decided to sell my very good 500 f4vr.

    Nikon D810

Sorry to hear of your problems with the D810. Mine works flawlessly and rarely misses a shot. Just like Duke Leto's. I haven't come across the problem you described in your second paragraph. You must have a broken camera. get it replaced or put right. It operates way better than a D300s.

    New Nikon D7200....

Have now processed a few hundred D7200 bird images in Lightroom using the D5300 spoof that Micloi here told us about. Quite impressed with detail retention and colour. Even though the jpegs are reputed to bet a bit better art high iso, processing the new files gives better detail rendition and...

    New Nikon 300mm f/4 VR

Nice images Neil. It is amazing how Nikon is really going for light but high quality optics and being quite innovative about it. I love this lens. I have so far found it very good on the D810, D7100, D810 and V3. It has great performance even with the new 1.4TCEIII and is sharp using the...

83x anyone? The new Nikon P900

    They call that a V3 and 70-300cx :-)

    New Nikon D7200....

Dave, it is now here and I have started posting on my Flickr photo stream D7200 images this week. You are right in that it is very similar to the D710 but has a faster more accurate 9 point AF and NO group AF. Buffer is large enough for most now. The sensor is probably Toshiba but the Exspeed...

    New Nikon 300mm f/4 VR

300mm PF E bird images with various Nikon Cameras I have set up a Flickr album with PF images using the V3, D7100 and D7200. https://www.flickr.com/photos/brandon_birder/sets/72157651123236040/

Good to hear Neil. Look forward to see what you do with it re the birds.

    D700 replacement????

That doesn't make sense. Apart from more frames per second and buffer size, how can a D3s be more useful for bird photography than D800? The pixel density is useless for anything unless up close. Perhaps not with an 800mm lens! Whereas it might be crazy to you to shoot DX with an FX camera, you...

    Nikon D810

Got my D810 back from Nikon within a week. White dots are gone and a black dot placed in the tripod thread base. Oddly the shop owner told me that a shutter plate was fixed/replaced?. Anyway glad it's fine and still working so well.

    Nikon D810

Although I have sent mine in just so it has been done I can't say I have ever seen white spots in normal birding use whatever the crop. The only way I can see them is by shooting a 30s dark frame and then enhance exposure 3 stops and clarity 50%. So a on issue really and good that Nikon is...

Appreciate where you are coming from Steve. Let's see what Nikon does next month. :-)

    Photographing birds in flight

Chosun, what you are asking in reference to a snapshot of a falcon is a big ask with all but the fastest camera lens combo's (D7100 &80-400afsg, D810 and D4s) and even then there are a lot of misses if you can't get onto the bird quickly and that just takes practice. With your camera AFC 9 point...

    Nikon D810

D810 is quite a good action camera There are very few concerns on DPReview or anywhere else regarding the functionality of the D810. Moire has not been a problem for me either with the D810 or the D7100. As for action usage, have you seen this DPReview News article by a sports photographer...

    D700 replacement????

I can't argue with that, though we don't know what price or features canon will put on the 7D Mk2 yet. Nikon still hasn't given any inkling that their best DX camera in the future will be anything other than a D7300 type camera. Some may move to Canon if there is a large price performance...

    D700 replacement????

Did you see this news article on DPreview showing that the D810 is a pretty good sport camera? http://www.dpreview.com/articles/3094466889/nikon-d810-a-sport-photographers-impressions?utm_campaign=internal-link&utm_source=mainmenu&utm_medium=text&ref=mainmenu

You would have to try one to see how sweet the D810 now works and handles.

    D700 replacement????

I agree with you Steve. The detail in the crops is excellent. You just don't need a 800mm lens just because the D8xx is FX. Now the D810 has a useful extra frame per sec and in DX mode with a box 7fps so is no slouch anymore. It also has a a huge buffer and much improved AF including group AF...

    Nikon 5300 verses 7100

Steve, I am a birder primarily who ventured into photography so I know where you are coming from. In many ways the panasonic is the ideal camera for you not getting in the way of birdwatching, but if you want to advance and carry more then I'm not sure $1100 wold do it for a camera and lens that...

    V3 and 70-300CX lens images

Neil, thanks for the query. When I looked at my post I noticed that I wrote 300mm f4 where in fact I mean't 300 f2.8. To answer your question now, the V3 combo is way more manoeuvrable than the D810/300f2.8 and these birds are fast and changing direction. Secondly I was zoomed back to 150-200mm...
