NL Pure condensation on eye pieces

I had exactly the same problem with a pair of 8X42 NL Pure that I purchased at the beginning of September only it was the right eyepiece that kept misting up. It was particularly bad in the field at temperatures below 4 degrees and rendered them useless. I took them back to the retailers and...

    RSPB Middleton Lakes

White-rumped Sandpiper 25.5.18 What a day it was on Friday (25th). I got to Middleton about 7:30am hoping that the pouring rain would bring something good down but never expected a White-rumped Sandpiper! After 3hrs I was soaked through to my underpants despite having a complete set of...

    RSPB Middleton Lakes

Thanks Nick, that's helpful. It's good to hear straight from the horse's mouth (or in this case the Reserve Manager's mouth!). It's a great reserve and because birders value it so much we are always interested in developments. It'll be interesting to see what impact the flume has over the...

    RSPB Middleton Lakes

I've heard more than once from the RSPB that the outlet onto private land has been improved to increase the outflow rate with the cooperation of the landowner but I don't know how regularly it's checked.

    RSPB Middleton Lakes

A couple of pictures of the work putting the flume into the inlet. Looks like it's going to be finished for the weekend, so the water is going to be allowed back in and all the lovely mud is going to disappear. I believe that the intention is to keep water levels high initially to encourage...

    RSPB Middleton Lakes

No problem Geoff. It's funny, I was talking to Nick Martin about you today! He reckons he first met you at RSPB Sandwell 18yrs ago! I was on the reserve this afternoon but unfortunately I didn't take any photos. The work is due to be completed by the weekend. The flume (basically a narrowing...

    RSPB Middleton Lakes

I understand that the RSPB are putting a 'flume' into the water channel that is the inlet for the reserve from the river. Contractors due to arrive on Tuesday. It's hoped that it will take out the peaks and pulses that come down the river and whilst not stopping flooding all together the hope is...

Eleonora's Falcon Arles Camargue France in December

BTW Richard, where did you look for your records? I'm not familiar with French birding online sites. I'll be returning to the area again and it would be useful to see what's about.

Eleonora's Falcon Arles Camargue France in December

It definitely wasn't a Hobby, I'm very familiar with them.

Eleonora's Falcon Arles Camargue France in December

Thank you so much Richard, really appreciate you looking through the records. I think you're right, it is one of the ones that got away. It's a shame I was in a car on the autoroute at the time and so couldn't get a photo - that's birding for you. All the best Steve

Thanks for the info Richard. Any more from anyone will be most welcome.

Eleonora's Falcon Arles Camargue France in December

It was a dark phase but I couldn't age it as it was viewed from a moving car, so I only had a few seconds. I've never seen one before but it was fairly small (but bigger than a Hobby) with very obviously long wings and tail. From a distance it looked almost black. I can't think what else it...

Eleonora's Falcon Arles Camargue France in December

Has anyone seen an Eleonora's Falcon this late in this region? I was driving near Arles and I saw what could only be an Eleonora's Falcon on power lines. This was 4th December and I can only find one reference in the literature to one being around that late and that was a young one and in...

There's a new blog covering Middleton Lakes and the other Tame Valley sites. It's called Mercian Birding. Here's a link http://mercianbirding.blogspot.co.uk/ Got to say a big thank you to Tom Perrins for his Tame Valley Birding blog that's kept so many of us informed for so long though.

The Egyptian Geese flew south towards KWP about 3pm in two flocks of 7 & 8. Two of them were Juveniles. I don't recall seeing that many on Middleton before, what are previous numbers like Geoff? Also a lone female Goosander on the river.

I agree that area is looking better, there were 2 Ruff there on Thursday, also a group of 6 Snipe nearby in clear sight.

    RSPB Middleton Lakes

Little Stint on the east scrape this afternoon (pic). 2 Ruff on the North Pit & 2 on JWs along with a Dunlin. Great White Egret on on JWs north. A Marsh Harrier was seen over the North Pit & one was reported head towards KWP. This despite the water levels being high and a lot of undergrowth - so...

    RSPB Middleton Lakes

Sorry Dave - it seems to have moved on pretty damn quick! It's not been seen since Thursday afternoon. It was heading west the last time I saw it so it could be heading your way - keep your eyes peeled!

    RSPB Middleton Lakes

2 and a LB Dowitcher eh? Very nice! Haven't seen one of those since April 2016 (Rutland Water). I found the Cattle Egret at Middleton at 2:25 (I was thinking it was pretty dead until then too) - I don't know how much you missed it by. Haven't seen much of you lately Geoff - Lincolnshire been...

    RSPB Middleton Lakes

Here's a picture of the Cattle Egret from Thursday afternoon. It was on the pool to the north of the West Screen on Jubilee Wetlands. It only hung around for about 25 minutes after I found it and then flew west over the canal. I tried but couldn't relocate it.

    RSPB Middleton Lakes

On Thursday afternoon there was a digger working in the trees on the north east side of Dosthill NR. I assumed that this area was RSPB land but suspected that it wasn't their workers. I later found out from a local that it isn't RSPB land in that area and that somebody has bought it and is...
