    Winterwatch 2022

My favourite 'don't say it as it's spelt' word was last week when some woman on TV pronounced 'envelope' as the thing you put a letter into instead of meaning 'wrap around'. It was a news reporter I think.

The bird you were most happy to see. Anywhere in the world.

My first peregrine too may have been from this same hide in West Yorkshire. But also my first twite from the same hide.

    Newbie - Scope or Binoculars

Just a comment saying I agree with this post. Always had Opticron binoculars over the years and found them great for purpose. But then Swarowksi bins and Kowa scope got a foot in the door! Think these will see us out .....

    My Swifts have gone

I agree with your comments Andy. I so look forward to them arriving - fewer and fewer each year, though - then they're gone. Not seen any of the half dozen or so for a few days but they may suddenly put in a last appearance before leaving for good.

A wander around the Shetland Isles, Scotland (not rarities - lots of photos).

Very interesting report, Andrea. Never visited these islands. Mull & Skye are the only ones we've stayed on. But what wonderful photos!! Absolutely brilliant - the subjects, focus, clarity. Perhaps you're a professional photographer. I've given up photographing nature, as that or birding...

Identify birds - taken at RSPB Minsmere, Saxmundham, Suffolk IP17 3BY - Tuesday 6, Wednesday 7th July 2021.

I really like the way you answer this query about ID,Alexander - and also the explanation as to how you arrive at them. I'm sure Jamkat will understand, especially when compared with pictures in an ID book. I never stop learning - I'd put the sand martins as swallows so had to second look them.

No announcement about Springwatch 2021 as of yet!

Yes - me too! I ask my OH if he can hear them, as he can't always because of his hearing difficulties. Needless to say, he couldn't hear them.

Nominees for the least intelligent bird in the world

Female mallards are stupid. Why on earth do they keep leading their flock of newborns over grids in the road, and losing them down the drain!!

    Lesvos Bird News 2019/2020

Would just like to say that we agree with the whole of Mick's response to Steve's news. We always found him so friendly when we came across him on the island, and he was so generous with news of bird sightings. We send our very best wishes to him for any future ventures. Thanks again Steve.

Ooh - I thought this was something from the late, great Mike Tomkies. Thanks for the heads-up though. Will certainly watch this.

    Visiting Mull?

AFAIK the centre at Loch Garten has been closed and certainly no ospreys have used the nest there this year. Capercaillies are in very short supply there too.

What a lovely photo Malcolm. I love moles and think I've only seen one in my whole life!! And that's a very, very long time. I seem to remember my cat brought it to show me! But I live in hopes of seeing another.

How many Binoculars do you have?

So true ! I've only ever had one pair at once. And I now have my ultimate which is Swarowski 8 x ?? and these will be my last pair too! The same with our telescope which is a Kowa 883 and also will see us out.
