Quick & dirty review of 8x42 Opticron Aurora.

Just so you know - at minus 42 degrees C - the Aurora met her limit. Been blooming parky in the interior at the Swedish / Norwegian border. Focusing became harder and slow. This did not happen when it was warmer (minus 18 to minus 25) during the day.

Is there really an optical improvement of the Kowa 88A over the old 883?

There are two absolute cherries on the estate I am allowed to go birdwatching on -one of each - and the new scope is an absolute no from me. If I were in your position? I'd buy the used and be ecstatic- because for near double the money the 88a is NOT even remotely close to being a worthwhile...

Another Eagle, Sharm, Egypt Dec 2023

    Your silliest/most entertaining/unlikely birding accomplishments

I never thought I'd pray to the God's of Ohm, Watt and Ampers... But I did and now I am a convert. (Was worth it for the Ross's gull in breeding plumage though)

    Your silliest/most entertaining/unlikely birding accomplishments

I was trapped behind an electric fence in a remote Alaskan valley. A trio of polar bear were doing their best to get through that fence but thankfully it was holding up. As the bears probed and bellowed, a lifer flew into view and landed not 100 feet away. To which I promptly started the ooooh...

Eagle Identification - Cape Nosappu, Hokkaido, Japan

Sea Eagle up front. Note the absolute CHONK of a beak on the Steller's behind it - and that bill is not present on the OP's pics - But the bi-coloured bill of a Juv White Tailed Sea Eagle is. Comparison - Deffo a Juv White Tailed Sea Eagle.

2nd Pair / Upgrade for Birder - Advise Needed

Opticron Verano punches WAY past its price point. For 500$ it is a steal - and is a far superior view to the Maven.

A thread for KenM - Equipment list to help end your 'back of camera I.D' threads once and for all

Cheers Pyrtle - I saw KenM's recent Sparrowhawk thread and thought it was better to try aid him with a few pointers, so we could see his original out of camera JPEG images (and not back of camera third hand as per usual.) One day he will find an absolute belter and itll go under the BF radar as...

A thread for KenM - Equipment list to help end your 'back of camera I.D' threads once and for all

Deffo a good idea - happily there are more than a few ways to do it - but hopefully we can sort KenM out and get some decent photos from him instead of gloomy back of camera shots.

A thread for KenM - Equipment list to help end your 'back of camera I.D' threads once and for all

Dear KenM, I love birdwatching, and I love a good ID post. I also strive hard to aid my fellow humans when I can. With that in mind and seeing your recent mauling? I decided to start this for your consideration. (I also deal daily with technology that seems to have gone under...
