Greater or Lesser Yellowlegs, Texas, 2020

The bird back left is clearly a Willet. Are the other birds in the foreground Greater (as I think) or Lesser Yellowlegs ? Logic behind comments appreciated. Thanks.

    Western or Semi-palmated Sandpiper, Trinidad

Thanks, that is a great detailed explanation. I had not heard about the leg positioning but I see what you mean. Our local guide said Western. My first thought was Semi-palmated but I didn't want to go against him.

    Raptor in Namibia

Thanks very much for the detailed explanation. I guess that we dismissed Shikra too quickly based on apparent size

    Raptor in Namibia

It too big for a Shikra. We did consider African Goshawk as in some photos there is some evidence of a black line under the chin.

    Raptor in Namibia

Only problem with Shikra is that we had just seen a pair of those and this bird was quite a bit bigger and looked different. Some books suggest a pale morph Ovambo with no chin barring. I have a feeling it is one of those that you can never be quite sure about !

    Raptor in Namibia

That was another thought but the location didn't seem to fit. Our guide was adamant that it was an Ovamba but we weren't totally convinced.

    Raptor in Namibia

We saw the bird in the attached photos in Etosha, Namibia on October 28th. We had just seen two Shikra and this bird was larger. Thoughts were that it was an Ovambo Sparrowhawk but some features such as the lack of barring on the chin didn't quite fit. I would welcome any comments from Southern...

    Pine Bunting, Shropshire England ?

Well, enough said on all of this, far too much disagreement. We all bird in our own way and that is good. I shall not bother seeking ID advice on this forum again, pity but I'm obviously not a real birder as far as several people are concerned.

    Pine Bunting, Shropshire England ?

I take exception to the expression "Blundering About" ! That I do not do and I know most if not all of the regular British Species ! My problem is with some vagrants. I do know that photos can be misleading but there is no substitute for taking a photo then identifying the bird later if you are...

    Kingfishers

Dipper I managed to photograph the Bourn Brook Dipper this morning looking upstream from near the big pipes. It then flew upstream. Also one Kingfisher in the same area.

    Pine Bunting, Shropshire England ?

Fascinating discussion, I only started birding about 6 years ago and have a view - if I haven't taken a photo of it I haven't seen it. I learned to identify birds by taking photos and going through pages of books to ID the species. Next time I saw the species I knew what it was (mostly !). I'm...
