    Clamator glandarius

Thanks Alexander! I think you nailed it. Fits with the midnight "sightings" also. At any rate, Waldkauz is a first for me, and fun to encounter them in the city! And no, I was definitely NOT offended ;-)

    Clamator glandarius

Well, we went back last night and they were indeed there, and through a stroke of luck I was able to enter the grounds of the old Sternwarte (observatory) and get a recording. It seems that maybe my 78 year old ears and tonal memory were playing tricks on me and the call was not exactly the way...

    Clamator glandarius

Thanks. Yes, that is the one I meant, and that is the only call we heard. The bird was sitting in a tree here 48.231551487238974, 16.336272155717516, not more than 20 meters away. We listened to it for about five minutes before it flew off. There was a second bird answering occasionally a bit...

    Clamator glandarius

No, not buzzard like call. My first instinct was Coocoo, though I have never heard that particular call. Similar timbre. Quite gentile in nature. We got a glimpse of it in the dark and it was perhaps the size of a pigeon, certainly not buzzard size. We have had a VERY hot summer!

    Clamator glandarius

Is it possible that I heard a pair of these calling the other night in a woody area of western Vienna, Austria? I had never heard a call like it, and a bit of digging around on the net led me to here: Great Spotted Cuckoo (Clamator glandarius) :: xeno-canto. The 5th and 6th sound sample sound...

    Hawfinch?.... Austria

I think you are right! A very rare sighting for around here and certainly a first for me!

    Hawfinch?.... Austria

Somehow it doesn't look right for Hawfinch, though we do have them around often... Very far away and bad air. Best I could get.

    Stumped on this one... Austria

    Ah! Thanks... A first!!

Could it be a female Blackcap??

    Baby Somthingorother, Hungary

Yes, the mask caused me some problems with the ID.

    Baby Somthingorother, Hungary

Baby somethingorother meant I assumed it was a baby because it was so fluffy and had no tail, but didn't know what it was. Picture was taken in Fertöújlak near the southern tip of the Neusiedlersee. To be precice, 47.677673, 16.830978

    Any ideas?

    Chiffchaff? Austria

You are right. Brilliant! He certainly sounded like a Chiffchaff, though he was having trouble getting cranked up and kept getting stuck after the first couple of chiffs and chaffs. :-)

    Chiffchaff? Austria

I want to call this a Chiffchaff, but what about the bar across the tail?

    Some kind of Thrush?? Austria

Thanks. That is what I suspected, but I wasn't sure of the markings on the breast. Seems to be a lot of variation. Long way off so not so clear. 120% crop roughly....

    Thanks.

    Sparrow Hawk? Austria

Thanks. P***ed me off though because he was sitting in our apple tree and I didn't notice him until I saw him flying over to the neighbors. Grrrr...

    Sparrow Hawk? Austria

On the neighbor's roof a few minutes ago, about 100 meters away.

    Astroscope + DSLR = Gallery!

After further testing and shooting I would say the Celestron Ultima 2x is sharper in the center but the Meade Barlow is more even overall. That makes the Meade the better choice for birds, but the Celestron is better for astro. I have, however, been able to squeeze additional magnification out...

    Astroscope + DSLR = Gallery!

Finally had a nice day, so we combined a trip to the dentist in the afternoon with a little birding in the morning. Gave me a chance to try out the Meade 2x TeleXtender telecentric Barlow. Works very well. Quite bright and sharp to the edges. More here, mixed in with shots with the 300/4 Pro +...

    Astroscope + DSLR = Gallery!

Hi Tord, Here is the whole cheese! ;-) https://www.flickr.com/photos/42162009@N04/40148328875/in/album-72157642350397735/ With the Barlow I was still just able to fit the whole moon into the frame. Would have been impossible without the tracking mount.

    Astroscope + DSLR = Gallery!

I got an old EQ3 equatorial tracking mount for my telescope from my friend, so I was able to get this using a 2x Barlow between my E-M1 II and my 600mm triplet. It was cold and VERY windy, and I know I wouldn't have stood a chance with my normal tripod. Stack of about 60 images. The Barlow is...
