One of the chicks at the nest near Porthmadog has already taken a number of short flights, with the other expected to follow shortly.

    First breeding Goldeneye in Wales?

A friend of mine has just phoned to say he saw a female Goldeneye with a single duckling on the Glaslyn, not far from the Osprey nest. He put up a couple of nest boxes here after seeing summering birds in the area last year, and it appears to have worked. I believe this is the first breeding...

    Black Scoter split (U.K.)

Following the split of Black Scoter by the BOU, can anybody please tell me what are the correct English and scientific names for the two new species? I can't find it on the BOU website (probably looking in the wrong place).

    Yellow-legged Gull on British list

I've just been told that Yellow-legged Gull has been split as a species (Larus cachinnans) by the BOURC. I don't remember seeing any announcement about this though. Can anybody confirm it?

    Well Choughed

Took a day off today (since I'm working tomorrow) and went to Braich y Pwll on the western tip of the Llyn peninsula, overlooking Bardsey. The highlight was when a flock of 51 Choughs decided to make it a raptor-free zone. They started by mobbing a pair of Kestrels, who fled the area at speed...

Air fares Europe to C. and S. America

Anyone planning to go birding in Central or South America might like to know that there are some excellent fares available from AirMadrid, departing from Madrid (makes sense, no?). I've just had a look at their website, and found fares of 399 euros to Buenos Aires and Quito, also good fares to...

    Christmas Bird bestseller?

The quote is from the electronic version of The Bookseller: The Observer suggests that Short Books' How to be a Bad Birdwatcher, by Simon Barnes, is to be this year's surprise Christmas bestseller, following in the steps of Lynne Truss' Eats, Shoots and Leaves, the potential of which the...

    Bird records for north-west Wales

If any of you did any birding in this area (Anglesey, Gwynedd and western Conwy) this year, we would be very glad to have your records for the Cambrian Bird Report. Please PM me for my e-mail address or for any enquiries as to type of record required etc. In general, if you went somewhere else...

    Canada Geese 1, Soccer 0

A flock of Canada Geese have caused the cancellation of a match at Porthmadog FC's ground by tearing up a large part of the pitch in search of food. See http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/north_west/3754450.stm

Merlins and Meadow Pipits can be friends ...

Having a day off today I took a walk along the coastal path west of Aberdaron at the tip of the Llyn peninsula. Though it didn't produce the hoped for Richard's Pipit or Lapland Bunting, there were good numbers of birds including 40+ Chough. The most remarkable sight however was a flock of...

    Welsh Osprey chick fledged

I hear that a pair of Ospreys at a secret location somewhere in Wales have fledged a chick. There have been rumours around that the pair near Porthmadog was not the only pair in Wales this year, but this one has been kept very quiet.

The seabird breeding season in North Wales

A few thoughts on the seabird breeding season locally, in view of the gloom from some other parts of the British Isles. The Guillemot and Razorbill colonies on South Stack, Anglesey have done well, with productivity probably above average. I don't have information on the Puffins. Sone tern...

    Herring Gulls predating Pigeon

An interesting bit of bird behaviour observed through the window on a flat roof at work this morning. Two juvenile Herring Gulls cornered and killed (rather messily) a Feral Pigeon, and are now busy eating it.

    Pyrenees

A few of us are going to the Pyrenees 11th-18th September, based in Jaca. We would like to get Snow Finch and Alpine Accentor (among other things), but the problem is that one of the group has a bad back as a result of an industrial accident, and would not be able to climb much, or indeed walk...
