    Tailless sparrow

Could be a cat, there are a few feral around unfortunately, and song sparrows like to browse on the ground.

    Two designs of squirrel discouragers

I use a inverted small bucket on the pole and it's been working perfectly for years, of course you'd have to make sure they can't jump directly onto the feeder from elsewhere.

    Tailless sparrow

So this guy showed up a few days ago, thought it looked weird till I took a closer look, it doesn't have any tail feathers. It's able to fly from the feeder to the cedar row a couple of meters away, but I don't know if it can fly normally over longer distance. I couldn't tell if any new tail...

the bird feeder was busy today

Haven't been to this forum for a while, but enough heresy and blabbing about what's happening on another continent from overly opinionated blowhards. Here's what just happened on another forum of what house sparrows do with graphical evidence. Forumer has bluebird boxes, tree swallow starts to...

the bird feeder was busy today

Most bluebird box operators are volunteers doing it for fun and aren't licensed (is there even a license for it?). If you look through the site you'll see she isn't doing it in her backyard. Her views and methods (i.e. wing clipping) is at times a bit extreme, but that doesn't invalidate the...

the bird feeder was busy today

Technically all the bluebird box operators are doing illegal things if you put it that way, yet they are responsible for the recovery of the bluebird population. Feel free to google other sites on house sparrow, that isn't the only one. The poster you quoted has repeated affirmed his love for...

the bird feeder was busy today

You may change your mind after seeing this (may contain graphic images, depends on what you consider graphic).

    Deterring pigeons

Pea sized brains can't be too smart, give it some time. The dark eyed juncos here have learned to use the hanging suet cage and nijer feeder after some time, even the cardinals will take a dab at the nijer I put on platform feeder.

How do I stop Grackles & Blackbirds?

There are only two ways really, exclusion (which you've down with the caged feeder), and removal.

Thinking of Making a Suet Cake

I have some made from peanut butter, vegetable shortening, cornmeal, peanut, cat food, flour, raisin etc. no strict recipe, just whatever you have on hand. Last year I used suet log and it attracted whole bunch of house sparrows so I took it down. This year I switched to cage with tail prop...

Are there fake bushnells coming out?

Funny thing is, the major reason I have an elite and legend is because I also have a fake bushnell (knew it's a fake). When I wanted a high quality bino, bushnell is where I started looking because I've been "introduced" to the brand already. Essentially bushnell made two sales in their high...

    Coconut Oil

I don't see why not, home made peanut butter suet also contains sizable amount of vegetable shortening.

    Coconut Oil

Peanut butter is an popular option.

Holy crap, that's a lot of house sparrows, I'd bring out the flamethrower. :eek!:

House Sparrow proof feeder.. or at leas less attractive

If they are hungry enough, or during breeding season, they'll go in regardless. Also if you have cardinals they won't go pass either.

To Use Thistle, Or Not To Use Thistle?

Are you sure they love the nijer not the PB? When I tried mixing it with sunflower seed every bird dig for sunflower and ignore the nijer.

Starlings, Safflower Seeds and Maggots vs Grub Worms

It's a shame, I'm literally watching them cutting down the forest and turning them into condos and million dollar houses. Sad, but well what can you do... If I win the lottery I'd just buy whatever nature that's left around Montreal and leave them as is. You can tell winter is here when the...

Starlings, Safflower Seeds and Maggots vs Grub Worms

I've been reading quite a bit on how to get rid of house sparrows and starlings, from what I've read and see, there's only one type of seed they hate, the crosman type, but you'd need a specialized feeder for them. :-O Even then it's only temporary till the next flock come along. Funny thing...

My home-made binocular harness (attached pictures)..

Yep that's what I meant. When you thread through the leather piece, instead of taking the line horizontally through the leather piece, you make an X shape. So instead of the top one, loop it like the bottom one

My home-made binocular harness (attached pictures)..

If you criss cross the lines on the back there would be no stress on the leather piece. It's a commonly used carry method for knife/pistol actually.

Best Binoculars of 2013: The Cornell Lab Review

I went through it more thoroughly, what happened is they gave everybody (60 reviewers!) a couple binoculars and asked them to rate it. So you ended up with a bunch of very subjective ratings that doesn't compare at all, they even admit to that. So there's nothing scientific, or useful about...

Best Binoculars of 2013: The Cornell Lab Review

Bushnell elite 8x42 cost $750, legend 10x25 $275, if that's what they paid I have a bridge I'd like to sell them.

    Individual focusing, why?

Some interesting points, I thought about ruggedness but didn't think they'd need more waterproofness, and not needing refocus often.

    Individual focusing, why?

Just wondering, why are some brand still use individual focusing predominately on some models with all the advances in central focusing? I was looking at steiner binoculars and pretty much all their big porros, marine, military, police, all use individual focusing.

    8x or 10x magnification

Not specific to birds, but there are times I can tell more detail with 10x than 8x despite the less bright image.
