    Tailless sparrow

So this guy showed up a few days ago, thought it looked weird till I took a closer look, it doesn't have any tail feathers. It's able to fly from the feeder to the cedar row a couple of meters away, but I don't know if it can fly normally over longer distance. I couldn't tell if any new tail...

    Individual focusing, why?

Just wondering, why are some brand still use individual focusing predominately on some models with all the advances in central focusing? I was looking at steiner binoculars and pretty much all their big porros, marine, military, police, all use individual focusing.

Any experience with winter roosting box?

After acquiring some basic woodworking tools in the last few month, I can whip one up pretty quickly. However I'm not sure it would be useful given my location. I'm located in the suburbs so bird species are limited, no forest dwellers like bluebird and woodpeckers, and winter population is...

Pretty sure these aren't house sparrows, what are they?

These look a lot like female house sparrows, but the eye streaks are a bit off, and has faint streaking on chest. I'm thinking maybe juvenile white crowned? They appear to flock with house sparrows around my feeder.

Bushnell Legend ultra HD 10x25 ED

I scoured though the web when I was deciding on if I should purchase these, and there really isn't much user feedback on them besides on retailer's websites. Now that I have them I posted these impressions in another thread, but thought I'd put them in a separate thread so any future potential...

Compact roof binoculars, have three in mind, opinions?

I'm looking for a pair of compact waterproof roof binoculars for when size/weight is a concern, currently I'm looking at three, the nikon trailblazer (sportstar ex) 8x25, steiner safari pro 10x26, and bushnell legend ultra hd 10x25. Would prefer 8x in two latter as well but they only come in...

    Suet storage and shelf life?

I bought a bulk pack of commercial suet, but it turned out so far the birds around here don't like it. So how should I store them, and how long can they be kept? Right now I keep them in basement but thinking I could take them out to the shed and let them freeze for the winter.

    Pentax porro compacts?

After getting a 10x42, I thought about a compact that I will actually likely to carry. Initially I looked at Nikon sportstar EX, but the short eye relief doesn't appear to work with my eyeglasses (or does it? haven't tried hands on yet). Pentax seems to have several models that are good price...

    Hairy Woodpecker food question

or maybe a downy, not 100% sure. There's one that I see once in a while to my black oil sunflower feeder, in my short observation it appears to have trouble with the shelled seed while other seed eaters like cardinal and sparrow munch down without problem. Can they eat the shelled seeds...

How do you deal with house sparrows?

This question is more meant for people in North America. I know you folks on the other side of pond love them, but at my little feeder they outnumber all other birds combined 20 to 1. They sit there and eat all day long, drive others away, probably eat 50 times as much while pooping all over the...

So apparently the town I live in bans bird feeding...

Who would've thought? Raccoons and such I can understand, but birds? What kind of fatass politician came up with that idea? :C Is this common? I'd imagine no since not even google turns up any result on such generalized ban. Fresh from the city newsletter...

Couple of questions from a newbie

Hi all, recently I've hung out a small bird feeder on top of the shed, stocked with half half mix of black oil sunflower and nyjer seeds. It has been getting visitors on and off, both the wanted and unwanted type. As far as birds go, are there any "desired" vs. "undesired" type? I had some...
