    External Hard Drive

At the present price point, SSDs are unsuited to the purpose of data backup. They are pricey and smaller than HDs.They're great as boot and programme drives - I use them exclusively for that. For an external backup drive a large spinning platter drive is best. If you want smaller, there are...

    Laptop update

One problem with desktop Linux is that it does not have any birding software. None of the available Windows (or of course Mac) packages will run. And no, they won't run under WINE either. Alan

    Alternative to Acrobat reader?

Hi Niels I use PDF-Exchange (http://www.tracker-software.com/product/pdf-xchange-viewer). It views pdfs, and also has an in browser element. It enables editing of pdfs, and the price is unbeatable. There is a paid version, but the free one does everything you're likely to need. Alan

Wings 6 - free bird listing software

Thanks for letting us know. I just checked the site last week. I wonder why he's made it free, not that I'm complaining. I also wonder if it will be compatible with Mountain Lion. I guess I'll soon see. Alan

    Web building software

My favourite is Joomla. It can do almost anything, having many available extensions and modules. It certainly beats using Dreamweaver, which is very painful. It isn't really intuitive, though. I learned it using a book called "Joomla Explained", available on Kindle. Alan

Bird that had eyes underneath wings in Tucson, AZ.

My guess would be Pigmy Owl. The "eyes" are in fact behind its neck, but they are a feature of the bird, and the OP definitely was impressed by "eyes". Alan

    Data backup and external drives

There are various applications such as Chronosync which will keep the two drives in sync without copying the files that already exist. I believe you could do it with Carbon Copy Cloner, which is free. Alan

    Large raptor S Coastal BC

Taken this afternoon. It was quite far away by the time I got my camera. I guess the options are Bald Eagle, Golden Eagle, and Red-tailed Hawk. Pretty poor photos, but some of you seem to be good on silhouettes. Thanks for looking. Alan
