    Large raptor S Coastal BC

Taken this afternoon. It was quite far away by the time I got my camera. I guess the options are Bald Eagle, Golden Eagle, and Red-tailed Hawk. Pretty poor photos, but some of you seem to be good on silhouettes. Thanks for looking. Alan

    Sparrow SW BC, Canada

This sparrow has been among the Juncos and Towhees on our deck today. It is long-tailed, black beak, and pink legs. The crown has several fine stripes. My best guess is a juvenile Towhee, but it's a bit late in the year for that. Any thoughts? Alan

    Sandpiper ID SW British Columbia

This bird has generated some discussion on our Yahoo! birding list. The expected sandpipers at the location are Black Turnstone, Surfbird, and Rock Sandpiper. Any opinions on this bird?

Why i quit feeding for summer

He is very persistent, and not at all shy about coming by day. If he keeps coming around, someone will call Fisheries and Game, and he's likely to be shot. So in order to try to prevent that, I have taken in all bird feeders. :-O Alan

    Bird Journal 2

Bluebird Technology released Version 2 of Bird Journal at the Tamworth Fair last weekend. It is available from their website now. It includes support for checklists, and checklists for most countries. There is also support for other wildlife checklists. There is support for displaying and...

    Bird Journal

Any thoughts on the programme Bird Journal from Bluebirdtechnology? It seems to be a British programme, and seems a lot less database geeky than others I've seen. Alan

    ID questions, Morelos, Mexico

Sorry, no pictures. The first was a small warbler (or vireo) type bird. Its upper body, head, and wings were tan. Its plumage was quite unmarked, but it had two clear features. A prominent white eye ring, and white outer rectrices. I can't find it in my book. The other was a more rounded...

    Books for Mexico

I will be spending October in Tepoztlan, Morelos, near Cuernavaca. The primary purpose of the trip is language study, but there will be lots of time left over for birding. My question is what books do I need. Having looked on Amazon, I gather that the classic is Howell & Webb, which I certainly...

    Travel dilemma

On Saturday I am going to visit my sister in Guardbridge, Fife. My question is -- should I take my scope and tripod, a considerable weight? There's lots of woodland birding around, but I really feel the Eden estuary demands a scope. The scope itself isn't a problem, it's the tripod. Maybe I...

    Book for Peru

Can any of you far-travelled experts suggest a good guide to the birds of Peru, specifically Manu? I am going to give myself a sixtieth birthday present of two weeks in Manu and Lima next March, and I need to swat up. Also, is there a recording of calls and song? Alan

    Most users

I wonder if the mods should have a look at the logs regarding the "Most users ever on line"? Previous highs have been in the seven to eight hundred range, never three thousand plus. The date also would repay scrutiny. Alan

    Canada soft on Starlings.

This appeared in today's Vancouver paper. It seems the Americans are slaughtering starlings by the thousand without making much of a dent in the population, and they're mad that we Canadians aren't joining in. Well, everybody knows we're soft on terrorists and drugs, so why not starlings...

    New bird at feeder

Every day for the past week I've had a new regular at my feeder, Anna's Hummingbird! Common enough in California, but here in BC we're at the extreme north of their range. I must say it's kind of neat watching a hummer in December! Alan

    Fall migration today

As far as passerines are concerned, fall migration in SW BC began today. Yesterday there were only a few songbirds around, today there were flocks everywhere. American Robins by the hundred were flying by, there were many flocks of mixed icterids (mostly Cow Birds and Brewer's Blackbird), and...

    Northern Flicker

This flicker was in my garden in February. It has a red malar stripe, and a red nape. It is definitely red-shafted, though this isn't apparent in the pictures. According to Sibley, there should be no red nape. A yellow-shafted should show a red nape, but a black malar. Is this some kind of...

    One more BC Gull

This is a common gull around here, especially at the moment. It has yellow legs and a dark eye. I have always thought it's a Mew Gull, but my field guides are unanimous that the mew gull has an unmarked yellow beak. This gull's beak has a red gonydeal spot, and a faint black spot on the upper...

    Unidentified bird

These pictures were taken at the head of Sechelt Inlet, 30 miles north of Vancouver BC in late August. My initial thought was that they might be Red-necked Phalarope, but doubts are setting in. The bird on the right in the second picture is a Lesser Yellowlegs. Alan

    My first digisscoped picture

This is a Chestnut-backed Chickadee at my garden suet. It's taken through a Swarovski 65HD with a Canon S100. I have no adapters, and simply held the camera up to the scope. The result is a bit mixed, and it is difficult to get the planes and angles right, plus there is camera and scope shake...
