January Birding: Best site in continental US

Hell all. I have a week in January with nothing else to do, but relax and get in some winter birding. Any recommendation of a location in the continental US to find something interesting? I would prefer south (Texas? California? New Mexico, etc.) as I currently reside in New Jersey. Any...

    Belize: January 7-14, 2006

Manatee, Thanks all for the comments! Regarding the Manatee, I believe that they are generally visible on most days in the lagoon behind Placencia. The tour I was on was to Monkey River and the manatee spotting was purely accidental, although the guides took it in stride as a matter of...

Yes! I think that Pine GBs are some of the most beautiful birds! Yours is a serious list!! How many feeding stations do you have and in what dimensions (ie, within how many feet from one another, etc)?

    DIY squirrel proof bird feeder

kc, well, the short answer is yes., but I have only ever tried one other suet. It was peanut flavor and the squirrels massacred it before anyone else even found it. I have witnessed Downy woodpeckers, WB Nuthatch, and Titmouse feeding from the spicy one. I just bought another peanut one...

    DIY squirrel proof bird feeder

Peewhit! Well done! I want to try something similar here with my suet feeder and let you know how it goes. Darn squirrels eat it so fast, and I'm forced to buy the expensive "spicy" version. Thanks!! jw

    Wasteful WB Nuthatch

That's true about the 3 cousins. I have a group of regulars, three titmouse and two chickadee, who love to pick and run. Thankfully they only pop up to another branch to pound away at the hulls. Th NH seems to fly further befor eating. Thanks all! I appreciate the stories.

    Wasteful WB Nuthatch

Anyone else notice this phenomenon? He approaches the feeder (squirrel proof, squared cylinder with sliding mesh cage on outside), hangs, and picks out seed after seed, drops them and then finally settles on one and flies away. I can't be sure, but it almost seems that he is trying to stash...

    Faded Bluebird??

Bluetail, I agree. Perhaps we can even postulate that the three birds were nestlings following along behind the others???

    Song or Savannah

Thanks, all. I can now agree that it was a swamper.

    Faded Bluebird??

Hello all! I would say that the three I viewed today (all of which were similarly colored) were migrants. I have been actively monitoring my local patch since I moved here early this spring and this is the first time I have ever seen Bluebirds in Jersey. I suppose that they are as you note...

    Faded Eastern Bluebird

Snapped this picture of an Eastern Bluebird in his/her fall attire. He/she was a member of a group of three which were calmly reviewing the scene from a copse of shrubby trees at the edge of a marsh.

    Song or Savannah

Hello all! Another mystery bird for me, and since I thought it was a Savannah, I'll post it here. I've noted a bunch of these guys hanging out in the scrub trees next to the marsh. What do you think? C.New Jersey, taken today. Jarrod

    Faded Bluebird??

Hello all, Snapped a shot of this bird today here in Central New Jersey. I noticed three of them gathered in an old dead tree beside a marsh. I then got close enough to this one when it selected a new perch. Any ideas on the species? Nearest, I can figure is an Eastern Bluebird, but will...

    New suet block feeder

Elizabeth, Have you had any woodpeckers visit your contraption? I'm debating whether I should hang my suet from a tree limb, build a box like yours, or keep it where it is: up against a 5 inch sapling, 5 ft off the ground. Jarrod

    Lonely Suet

hello all! Well, I have had one visitor return again and again for my new suet block (peanut mix). Unfortunately, he is gray, and has a long bushy tail... How does everyone hang their suet? is it up against the tree? or free hanging?? I noticed a white-breasted nuthatch this afternoon in...
