Duck ID: Regent's Park, London, UK

Chestnut Teal No other exotic 'fliers' that I know of, thankfully. (I once asked a member of Park staff about these unpinioned ducks. Apparently, it's negligence on the part of the supplier...)

Duck ID: Regent's Park, London, UK

Chestnut Teal It's a winged female Chestnut Teal from the Park collection, Dante. (The first time I saw it land on the main lake, it threw me as well - it's usually unaccompanied. However, I once saw it flying over the lake with a male into the Longbridge sanctuary.)

Various birds from Regent's park, London, UK

Yes, I frequent the park, though not so often on weekends - thus my delight at your find! Also, on good migration mornings I spend much of my time on Primrose Hill scanning for flyovers. It's been the best winter ever for Firecrests - I think the warm December encouraged them to stay put. Have...

Various birds from Regent's park, London, UK

Excellent sighting, Dante! It's the Park's first Stonechat of the year (a week earlier than last year). Was it on the 'chat bush' (in the rough-grass area of the playing fields near the northeast end of the lake)? There have been several Park sightings in the past few years - more...

New Product To Be Launched 4-Mar-2016

Thanks for the visual evidence of colour bias, Globetrotter. Had he included Swarovski ELs, however, I'm sure they would have appeared equally colour-biased - toward red/orange/brown - so on that score it's down to personal preference. However, what really set the Swaro image apart imo was the...

New Product To Be Launched 4-Mar-2016

I did point out in my review that the SFs' image had imo the brightest image and most 'natural' colour i.e. most marginal colour-bias (among Zeiss, Leica and Swaro). However, like Globetrotter I noticed that the Zeiss model picked up greens (and blues) particularly well - compared to the others.

New Product To Be Launched 4-Mar-2016

I like your thinking, Globetrotter - and having just field-tested the current 10x42 versions (Swaro EL v Zeiss SF), I'm sorry to report that nothing much has changed...

New Product To Be Launched 4-Mar-2016

Bang on, Troubador. MMD (Latvian hunting magazine) tweeted me to confirm that "IWA 2016" will indeed be the venue for Swarovski's product-launch.

New Product To Be Launched 4-Mar-2016

Thanks, Theo98 and Troubador, great work! As you're on a roll, could I have your predictions for this weekend's Super Bowl and Premier League results, please? (Ka-ching!) ;) (I got a reply from @SwarovskiOptik to my plea for details. It gave nothing away, of course...)

New Product To Be Launched 4-Mar-2016

Thanks for the reassuring speculation in favour of hunting equipment, folks - I might be able to sleep now. :eek!: (Later today is my last chance to get a refund on the EL 10x42s! I mentioned this in my tweeted reply to @SwarovskiOptik asking for more details - well, it's worth a try...)...

New Product To Be Launched 4-Mar-2016

@SwarovskiOptik just tweeted (1 Feb 16:55) the following: "March 4, 2016 is D-day. We will be presenting our new landmark product that completely redefines performance." Anybody know what it is? Specifically, will it supplant the EL 10x42 binoculars that I just bought?!?

    Premium 10x42 Leica/Swarovski/Zeiss compared

Fair point, but my style of birding mitigates against the use of a scope: normally I cycle in, vismig from a viewpoint and then ramble on foot through my (shorebird-free) patch, which is huge (taking at least four hours to cover well, even at a brisk walking pace). That's why I was sweating...

    Premium 10x42 Leica/Swarovski/Zeiss compared

Thanks for your comments. I went for the higher power (12x) in the hope of improving my chances of bringing distant, fly-away raptors close enough to ID before it was too late! Indeed there was an improvement for vismigging purposes, but it wasn't significant enough to outweigh their size/weight...

    Premium 10x42 Leica/Swarovski/Zeiss compared

Funny thing is, James, I initially thought the Zeiss option would be the best, as the Victory SF model is designed primarily for birders. Disappointment with its image and focus (ironically, 'SF' stands for 'smooth focus') prompted this field test, during which I was blown away by the Swarovski...

    Premium 10x42 Leica/Swarovski/Zeiss compared

I've spent the past 11 days field-testing premium 10x42 bins - a step up from the mid-priced 7x35 Bushnells I used for 35 years. Here are my impressions (NB these results may not apply to 8x models): Swarovski EL Swarovision FieldPro 10x42 PROS: sharp, colour-saturated, contrasting image (has...
