    Diallers

Dam, read this twice before posting as well. Just goes to show you can't be too careful. Regards Paul

    Great Bustard arrives at Heathrow

What are the guidelines for ticking introduced birds? I assume I have to wait for them to breed. Is the first chick tickable? If so, we had a couple of Black swans at Oare Marshes a while back. If they had chicks would they qualify as a tick?

    Diallers

Guess you've heard this all before, but here it goes. 1) Use a good firewall, (Zone Alarm is a good free package) and ensure you keep it up to date. Any out going calls, even if you do not know the software is dialing, will need approval before it can connect. 2) Make sure your virus checker is...

    Boats to Blakeney Point

Tom Looks like only seal trips tomorrow. Departures frrom 'Bean boat trips'are 09.15 and 18.00 both not landing on the point. I suspect the tides are not good. If you fancy a walk there have been some interesting reports from the point over the last couple of days. I do not have info on the...

Straight or Angled Eyepiece Scope for Birding?

Hi Milo I used to use a straight for target archery for 15 years. It was fine but had not started birding then. I tried an angled about two years ago when I started birding and would not go back. I actusally find it easier to find a bird with the angled now. It also keeps the scope lower so it...

    Advice for a newbie

2Meg camera Hi Alan You may noy read this as the thread is getting on a bit but here are my thoughts just in case you do. Do not be too quick to dump your 2Meg camera. As long as the image is not too small it should give you pretty good images. I have attached some below that I took with my...

    Gull help please

Justice for gulls Mr Mckinney I am dissapointed that having been shot out the sky for applying an anthropomorphic term to a pigeon, that I read a sense of justice being applied to gulls. ;)

    Quail Rules?

Hells Bells! I thought that if I ever got to see a quail in my lifetime at least I would recognise it. Now I find out there are Japanese coppies out there. I find it hard enough to tick my first birds anyway. I try to get somebody else to confirm my sighting, and if I have any doubt at all I...

    night birding--lights

The night vision devices are coming down in price and are very small. They are non- intrusive and resolution has improved. They are not yet as good as the latest military generation sights but somebody on BF might have tried them. They are also usually low gain,x3 ish. This might be a problem as...

    What goose?

Photo taken at Dungeness in Kent, England, today. Can anybody help? I'm guessing at a hybrid, but of what?

Birds of prey and killing methods

Mr Mckinney I did not mean to cause any offense with my first statement and my appologies as I no doubt have. I have no biased views towards or against racing pigeons and I would not entice smaller birds into my garden knowing a sparrowhawk frequented it if I would be upset or shocked if one is...

Birds of prey and killing methods

I think some people take life too seriously. I did not state whether the hawk was right or wrong, all said was a moral judgement was not applicable. Please explain how my view was 'narrow minded' as I did not express my views at all on birding, and did not wish to offend some readers with a...

    Which Scope?

I use a Leica APO77. It would set you back about £850 but the non APO is also very good. Other scopes I tried were all stunning at the higher price range. The Leica 32x eye piece is handy in that it will take 1.5" dia push fit waste pipe as a snug fit inside the eye cup. A number of cameras will...

Birds of prey and killing methods

A picture for bird lovers This little chap landed on my patio a couple of months ago. It did not get much further. I have a female Sparrowhawk that visits my garden very day or so. Although regular it does not stay longer than to nab one of the sparrows I feed regularly. It stayed for a day...

    Help with identification

Ah - there you go. Good to have experts. It would be good to have idents in bird books that show male, female and young of each species.

    Help with identification

I'm no expert either, but it does look kike it could be a young Ring Ouzel. It will be interesting to see what the others say.

    Skylight filter for APO77

:h?: Does anyone have any experience using a skylight filter on the front of a Leica APO77 or similar? As I have been sea watching this 'summer' I have noticed a build up of spray and dust on the objective lens, more so than usual. A filter like a skylight 1B will keep the costly glass clean but...

    Gull help please

Interesting thread. I've only been serious about a year so my ID is pretty dodgy still. But I pulled the image in to PSP and sampled the pixels across the leg. The camera definately sampled pink as the pixels were weighted red over green. Any hint of yellow and the pixels would be equal...

    Rspb Fg.pc

Tried them at Titchwell last week while my wife was looking for a new pair of bins. They did not agree with her as she has a very small IPD but when I tried them I was very impressed. They will not compare to the top end bins and this would be unfair to try, but they seemed good value. Light...

    British Birds - Guide Books

"RSPB Birds of Britain and Europe" by Rob Hume is excellent! I have the Collins as well but find the illustrations a bit clinical. The Rob Hume book has real photo's, so if your new, I've only been serious for the last year, it helps a lot.

    What Tern?

What Tern cont. I have another picy. Still not the best. Light was strong from the left. The tail feathers seemed long in the original picy. The bird was at Oare Marshes about 8 weeks ago. Roseates were also on the south coast about the same time. Quark5

    What Tern?

Thanks Michael Not a disappointment, it's better to know. At least I can still look forward to my first Roseate. Quark5
