New Zeiss binos 8x40 SFL and 10x40 SFL

Agree on the diopter adjustment, not promising, but if it works, why not. As a variant of the SF, I expect field flattening in the weird way the SF is field flattened (that is, existence of a field flattening lens) and which has little to do with the Swarovski way (effectively flattening the...

    6 January 2022 - New Leica announcement

Of course the Noctivid will profit as well if they want to deliver for birding. The most obvious changes are neutral colour and higher contrast. It could well be that new glass types were incorporated that needed other coatings as well, but I am sure Leica really decided to go for neutral...

    6 January 2022 - New Leica announcement

I did make a short argument how I compare. I compared my old 7x42 about 3 months ago directly to my SLC, thoroughly, and I am comparing the new 7x42 against the SLC, too. The 8x32 I always have a second reference, as well as EDG and Noctivid until recently. I had the SLC in Wetzlar and the only...

    6 January 2022 - New Leica announcement

I can say for sure the 7x42 is massively improved compared with my ex 7x42 from 5 years ago which I loved, using my one year old SLC8x42 as a reference line. Most UVs in Wetzlar were a bit weaker than the SLC under the observation conditions, except the phenomenal 8x50. The new 7x42 is much...

    6 January 2022 - New Leica announcement

Regarding the 3D, given the same stereo basis, the optical correction does influence the perceived 3D in so many ways, field curvature is obviously one important thing, as well as contrast. I´d leave the details to the optical designers because in the end it is rocket science. It does matter in...

    6 January 2022 - New Leica announcement

Noctivid 8x32. I keep my fingers crossed I can see the "true greatness" that is painfully absent from the 42mm Noctivids but still plenty enough in my UV8x32HD+. It´s of course an ironic advertising statement - true greatness does not depend on size etc. There is no room and also no need for...

    Objective coating Changes

John, I totally believe you that manufacturers do need to balance glass properties with different coatings, and even to accommodate for different batches of the same glass, which must be a royal pain. The latter I take from cinematography forums, because when a set of prime lenses does not have...

    Objective coating Changes

Of course you are right, because the full argument needs a 180 degree twist to be comprehensible. The colour that is reflected by the coating is definitely strongly reduced in the transmission curve, so the colour cast is "opposite" on a colour wheel. Colour wheel is the handy interface in the...

    Objective coating Changes

I´d call them Chinese nightmare coatings.

    Tobias’ Visit to Leica Wetzlar

Regarding the 30 year warranty, starting Jan 1 2021, fully transferable, first 10 years no matter why a damage happened: Leica Sport Optics Warranty Program That would explain the steep rise in prices for Leica binoculars, as I expect Leica has to pay for insurances... ;) Now the question is...

    Tobias’ Visit to Leica Wetzlar

I deliberately refrained from mentioning the Zeiss Design Selection but the similarity is indeed amusing. Glad I did not spoil the discovery for you. The Leicas look much better though. Nevertheless the final design was much nicer, a wonderful design and binoculars which have proven to survive...

    Tobias’ Visit to Leica Wetzlar

Thanks for all your input. Regarding Leica warranty, I was wrong and will correct that information asap. I have not double checked, but then I am not a paid journalist. I am pretty sure I got this information somewhere during the day in Wetzlar, but can't remember where and why. I found it very...

    UVHD+ coating change between 2015 and 2019?

In case of the SLC 8x42, magenta/tobacco and blue are reflected, suggesting a slight yellow-green bias. Exactly confirmed by Gij´s measurements. But granted this an exception, most coatings look more complex.

    UVHD+ coating change between 2015 and 2019?

Thanks for pointing this out, I find this VERY interesting and well worth investigating! Generally, Leica coatings seem to differ a lot and change over the years. And it might be well possible that Leica used older HD lenses they still had in stock in HD+ binoculars. Two points why I find this...

Is it really worth buying an NL 8x42?

The 8x42 SLC is a stunning glass and it surpasses all other available as new 8x42s I have tried in its lovely, very deep rendering of space. It drags you right into the scene, in that sense it is more transparent than the competition. It is together with the Leica UVHD+ the only alpha 8x42 now...

SLC range to be discontinued by Swarovski!

I´m not sure your point of view makes much sense from the standpoint of evolutionary biology - too much of your notions etc. influencing your vision and you're dead or in psychiatry.

    repair cost

Jon´s publication makes fascinating reading for tech buffs, but for commercial reasons is 100% guaranteed positive at all times. I never read one critical question in one of his interviews either.

    repair cost

Sorry, but your post is pretty hard to judge without you at least saying how old this glass was. 60 Euro would be them estimating having half an hour of work with this case. Which is probably underestimated and insofar a very fair price. Probably they need to calculate with even more than 120...

SLC range to be discontinued by Swarovski!

Maybe as I'm always looking for 3D pop, no matter which glass - stills, cinematography, binoculars. But I suspect a more technical evaluation of image high fidelity would also suggest the SLC is a better bin than the Nocti...

Leica Noctivid 8x42 design flaws and review - owners please check

To bring my "vendetta" with the Noctivid to an end... I have compared the Noctivid to my new SLC 8x42 for a week now, plus to EDG 8x42 and UVHD+8x32. 1. Flare. The SLC is probably not most famous for flare control but against a strong sun the Noctivid was generally worse with milky veiling...

SLC range to be discontinued by Swarovski!

Interesting, of course it is both a matter of taste, but - as always - also of sample quality. I have dismissed the SLC8x42 when I tested it in 2015 as not being up to the quality of other alpha bins. A good upper middle class bin but overpriced here in Germany. I only ordered one recently...

SLC range to be discontinued by Swarovski!

Agreed. Once you've seen it, there is no going back.

SLC range to be discontinued by Swarovski!

Yes, because people and sheep have a lot in common. The grass seems always greenest where the crowds are. The NL being a flat field will have the same horrible rendering of space as their predecessors. Whereas the SLC 8x42 almost renders as deep as an AK prism glass.

Binomania video review of Zeiss Victory Pocket 8x25

"Incredible" is the right word. But 8x25s must be pretty easy to build.

SLC range to be discontinued by Swarovski!

I got a new SLC 8x42 couple of days ago (had ordered a demo of the previous model SLC HD instead, but...). It is a much better sample than the one I tested in 2014. In fact, since quite some time I did not have so much fun using a binocular (at the moment, I have EDG 8x42, Nocti 8x42, UVHD+...
