Collins bird guide 3rd edition in an App

Does anyone use the Android app in their family library? If so, have you updated and managed to update any of the other phones without paying for each phone/account to upgrade? Surely the upgrade should be available to use in the family library in the same way as the App is?

    Rough-legged buzzard? - Northwest Turkey

As Smiths has said, this is a very pale Long-legged Buzzard. Rough-legged Buzzard would never show those buffy and rufescent tones.

    Dodging Diver at Backwater Reservoir

And, if you want to add likelihood into the equation, Red-throated is generally the rarer of the two inland.

    Dodging Diver at Backwater Reservoir

Kind of think that's the point though... hard to confirm either way from the images provided. I wouldn't like to say with any certainty.

    Dodging Diver at Backwater Reservoir

I'm not sure the photos are good enough to be 100% sure? The dark back, contrasting with paler nape, and a lot of white on the flanks, gives some Black-throated Diver vibes to me, but never easy from less than adequate photos, and may be a Red-throated.

    Trinidad - Shore Bird Identification

Is it actually a 1cy bird though, or a moulting adult?

    Storm Petrel

99.9% chance it is Elliot's. Certainly looks like one, and they're abundant there. But without seeng the belly, it's tough to be categoric.

    Shetland UK - Redpoll ID

Looks more like a Common (Mealy) to me, slightly overexposed, but would prefer to see more photos.

    Fawn-colored Lark

I don't think they occur there...

Chiff Chaff or Willow Warbler please

Well I have to say, in my opinion, this is about as clear-cut Chiffchaff as one could hope for, and great photos to make it easy! Chiffy head pattern including nice eyering under the eye, plumage tones, dark legs, shortish pp etc

    Denmark. Duck

🤔 I think you'll find I did, which is why I expanded my answer. Apologies if my use of answers in the plural confused you. But the previous answers (in the plural) suggested teal with some degree of reasoning. With such a poor and pixelated image, it is not possible to go in to fine detail. Hey ho.

Bunting ID (W France, january 5th)

What pro Cirl Bunting features does it have? Cirl would not have crossed my mind really. Reed and Cirl are not typically confusion species, though granted, the pic is not great.

    Denmark. Duck

The answers had already been given above! Clearly a poor photo of a dabbling duck, most likely a (Eurasian) Teal.
  21. petemorris

Bunting ID (W France, january 5th)

I think they often show a pale spot there, and if the highlights are blown out a bit, as is perhaps the case in the OP's picture, it could look more conspicuous than it really is. See the pic below from David Bradley's blog post for example.

    Denmark. Duck

    Oh no it isn't!
  23. petemorris

Bunting ID (W France, january 5th)

Well indeed, which is why I was non-comittal (other than pretty sure it wasn't a Cirl Bunting or Yellowhammer). However, I feel that the ear-covert pattern, particularly the obvious dark lower border, and thick eyestripe behind the eye, are wrong for Little Bunting.
  24. petemorris

Bunting ID (W France, january 5th)

What I mentioned before, and what I was referring to, is that it was one poor image. I was a little baffled why everyone was convinced it had to be a Yellowhammer or Cirl Bunting. You are correct that I only mentioned Reed Bunting when you asked me. Not really sure what the problem with that is?
  25. petemorris

Bunting ID (W France, january 5th)

As I said, one poor photo is not easy to judge, but I do not see why it is not a Common Reed Bunting.
