    Just started phonescoping

I got a Kowa 883 scope just before lockdown so have only started being able to test it over the last two weeks. It’s incredibly hard to get photos but I’m having a little success with video. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Are there are good deals on the KOWA TSN-883 at the mo?

Thinking of getting one of these for the new year but I'm not too sure the best place to buy. Ace Optics seems to have 7% off at mo, but I don't know if historically there are better deals early January.

    Scotland advice

Hi there, I've been a bit despondent lately and I'm hoping to get back into my birding/photography which I've not done for a good year. I'm hoping to kickstart things by taking a trip to Scotland as I've never been and as I'm a relative novice, there are plenty of birds including divers, skuas...

Kowa 883. Black Friday sales likely?

I got a nice bonus at work and feel like investing in a scope. I know the Kowa is excellent, but I was wondering if it's likely to be cheaper in the run up to Black Friday. Do companies offer you a discount if you agree to pay it all off up front?

    Good processing pics for sharpness

I've been tinkering around in lightroom 5 and I feel my shots are never quite sharp enough. Does anyone have some good universal settings they use? In general I tend to whack shadows up to around 50-80 on the slider, go for masking of around 70, detail of around 80 and sharpness of 50. I'll...

Struggling to lock-on to birds with Canon 600mm USM IS L

So I've been taking my 600mm telephoto lens out with me more and more because I really don't use it enough. I've noticed that the last few times I've taken it out I've really struggled to lock onto targets and I can't get any in-focus shots. It's fine with ground birds, but a nightmare when...

Birds In Flight Settings For Canon 7D MKII

Hi everyone. I've had a 7D MKII for a while now but used it in conjunction with my Canon 600mm IS to try and take photos of the Black Terns that were at Longham Lakes today. Basically most of my shots were rubbish as the autofocus simply didn't want to lock onto the birds, which made for a very...

    Photographing kingfisher nests

When people say you are not allowed to photograph nests without a licence. Do they mean the actual nest, the entrance or both? As they nest in tunnels I assume you can't photograph the actual entrance either. Could someone shed some light on this?

    Chiffchaffs?

Chiffchaffs? UK Longham Lakes I think they both are, but the out of focus one looks too light. I think this is definitely a ChiffChaff I think this is out of focus :-O

Best Canon 7D MK II Settings

What settings are people using for birds in flight and when birds are in trees surrounded by branches? While I'm impressed with how snappy the autofocus is, it jumps quickly to nearby branches if I keep autofocus on (which I'm doing to try and ensure the bird is as sharp as possible.

Lesser Black Backed gull? Longham Lakes UK

I'm thinking the one in the bottom left corner. I believe the rest to be Herrring Gulls.

Is the 7D Mk 2 a significant upgrade?

Do you own a 7D Mk 2? Did you own the original? How do they compare, is there a big noticeable difference? I was torn between a 5D Mk3 and a 7D but after talking with Tim Hunt (an award winning wildlife photographer who's recently started working at our company) he thinks that the 7D MK2 would...

    The birds of Dorset book

I'm not sure if people have got this. But I've just had it delivered for a bargain at £10 brand new (with £3 postage). It's normally £40 and it looks really, really interesting...

    Patchwork challenge 2016

Anyone doing this? I've been inspired by a fellow blogger and it sounds quite fun. I'm trying to decide on my patch. I like the idea of long ham lakes and parts of hengistbury head, but am u sure if you can have two separate patches. Also, I'm unsure how to plan out my patch in terms of Kilometers.

    Farm birds in Dorset.

Does anyone know a good place to see barn owls, quails, partridges and red legged partridges in Dorset. I'm trying to get new birds for my blog, and wanted to aim for the above. I'm also after corn buntings, but imagine I've missed them now.

Does my lens need micro adjusting?

Hi everyone. A couple of months ago I had the opportunity to get a 600mm L IS USM at a very good price. I've taken it out a few times but I'm struggling to get sharp images with it. I know it's a professional lens and I'm not a professional, but I thought I'd be getting more keepers than what...

Is this a Common Gull? I'm not sure on this one (on right). It seemed to have distinctive markings.

    I have a feeling it's a reed warbler.

Gulls, gulls, gulls. Blashford lakes, UK.

I'm sure these are just black-headed gulls with a herring gull but I'd love to be proven wrong. I've been given the helm's guide for my birthday today, so hopefully that will help when I've read it!

    Welsh rarities

I am going to spend 8 days travelling around the Welsh coast with my father. We are aiming to visit both North and South Wales and will be travelling late September, early October. Can any one recommend good locations. I am particularly interested in seeing grouse of any sort and chough, but...

    Canon 500mm F4 lens - should I get one

As some of you may remember I was recently looking at picking up either a canon 5Dmk3 or a Canon 7Dmk 2 with a sigma lens. My wife is now saying I can have a loan of £4000, so I'm now wondering if I should simply take the plunge and get a second hand Canon 500mm. It will take me 4 years to pay...

    Spotted Flycatcher? Wales

Spotted Flycatcher, Reed Bunting? Water Pipit Wales It was stupidly far away, but it looks a bit Flycatcherish I think it's with a Meadow Pipit, but surely this isn't an out of focus Reed Bunting? It's nowhere near where I'd expect to usually see it. This last one was again very far away...

    Canon 7dmk2 or canon 5dmk3

I've been planning to get the canon 7dmk2, but I've been wondering if the canon 5d mk3 would be better. Do people prefer full frame or crop for bird photography. I've only ever used crop, but understand you can crop better on full frames. I can't afford a 500mm prime, so thought I would get a...
