    China observations

The Winter Cuckoo Saturday at Nanhui produced relatively little in terms of grebes or divers, but some 200+ Common Shelducks out on the far flats provided some consolation, and the winter morning was brightened up by the bright rufous wings of a Lesser Coucal- a juvenile, no less, swooping...

Pelican Pals Popped down to Nanhui today, sadly dipped Slavonian Grebe, the current celebrity bird down there, but did manage to enjoy the aerobatic flips and turns of two displaying Peregrines and an unexpectedly high scaup count (around 10-11 birds by the end of the day). Also saw that the...

Hey Dev! Yeah, I remember seeing them on your website, was quite surprised but based on the size differences and the bill, those were definitely Whoopers. I was honestly more surprised at the Shanghai birders' reactions to my calling it out as a Whooper- that it was impossible, Whooper was way...

    Female scaup? Surrey UK Dec15

I'd go with female Scaup, based on the head structure (which is evidently different from the female Tuftie in the last photo) and the more limited black section of the bill (the 'nail'). However, I haven't had too much experience with the species myself, so anyone feel free to correct me if I'm...

A half-day's trip down to Chongming over the weekend bagged a substantial amount of quality sightings, including, but not limited to: -Both Hooded and Common ('Grey') Cranes scattered in small family groups throughout the preserve, including what appeared to be at least one hybrid between the...

    Birding the coast around Shanghai

Congratulations on the owls! Both great sightings, and lovely photos to boot. The Jack Snipe is actually a great record as well (if even more so than at least the Long-eared in terms of rarity). I believe this is the first time it has been recorded in Shanghai since 1921 :D

Thanks Dev! Here's to the hope that the little guy survives and pushes onwards to wherever he might be headed. B (:

Great work Dev! Lovely photos, and a phenomenal count too. :D

Hey StarBurst! Where in China are you exactly? There are certainly almost no Bullfinches in Shanghai (vagrants), and I imagine your Chinese Egret may be Little Egret? Those are the more common of the species we get here in Shanghai, and they are predominantly found on the coast during migration...

A Bird in the Hand... Found a window-stunned Woodcock at school today. Checked up on it routinely between classes, and eventually captured it from a rather insecure location and released it into a shrubby area beyond the school fence. It did to appear to have any mortal injuries (at least that...

Honey Buzzards Are In On a recent trip to Nanhui, we were not 10 minutes out of my compound when my dad suddenly pointed upwards at around 7-8 raptors doing broad wheels overhead. As he quickly parked the car at the side of the road, I looked up and saw the raptors, now right above the car...

    Birding the coast around Shanghai

"No doubt the abundance of bird life is accounted for by the protecticn they receive from the Chinese, whose religion prevents their wanton destruction." Reading these words in a time during which Shanghai's birdlife is under heavy fire, there is a terribly ringing sort of irony to them...

The Reef Heron has never been recorded in Shanghai. It is found in small and localised numbers further down the coast in Fujian. I'm not sure about the percentage split along the south Chinese coast...maybe MKinHK (whose haunts do have some Reef Herons) may have some information there?

    Birding the coast around Shanghai

@Mjgrunwell: I'm not stating that the pelican in your photos is a Great White; I'm far from an expert on Pelicans, and I've never seen any in China. I'm merely supporting your theory that it could be an escapee, as the local zoological institutions often have turned out pairs or small groups of...

    Birding the coast around Shanghai

There has been an escaped Great White Pelican hanging around there recently- looks like that could be the bird you've seen.

    The Magic Roundabout

Those Golden Plovers are lovely! And the Whydah's quite interesting-looking too in eclipse (I'm used to males in full breeding attire), resembles the north american White-crowned Sparrow for some reason..

Thanks Dev! It was definitely great seeing those particular waders, as I'd only seen then at most once or twice before .Great Knot I knew was in season, but Red I wasn't expecting at all, and it was great seeing them. They're not as common as some of the other species, I've heard? I've certainly...

Thanks Mike! And yes, its very sad to see the worsening process every time I visit Nanhui..very discouraging, more or less symbolising the costs of so-called 'progress' here.

For the first time in several months, I visited my old haunt at Nanhui, to finally pin down an old nemesis, plot out several new future migratory hotspots, and behold the beauty of this wetland whilst it was still standing- for the tall, empty glass husks of the city were beginning to slither...

A New Migration Season! Here we go! As the rains come sweeping in, some the first wave of migrators are beginning to show up in Shanghai. The heavy rains throughout Shanghai today have brought around 7 Eastern Yellow Wagtail and 1 Little Ringed Plover onto the school's field today. Nothing...

    Common Birds in China?

Having parents (although my parents know a decent deal more than they used to) and relatives who honestly don't notice all that many birds, I'll list the following for Shanghai: Eurasian Tree Sparrow (anything smallish, grey/brown is a sparrow). Spotted Dove ('wild pigeon') Hwamei (typically...

Hey Kevin, Would you happen to have any photos of the Marsh Tits? I don't think the species has been recorded in Shanghai at all in recent years, if ever. Regards, Larry

    Shanghai Perambulations

Just got back from a trip to Australia! Good to hear that you've all been more or less active recently- I heard about the blow to Nanhui recently, not a great welcoming-back note.. :( On the brighter hand, apparently the Bund is rife with good gulls: apart from Heuglin's (Lesser Black-backed)...
