Gull with deformed bill, Somerset UK

I saw this chap/chapess at Watchet in Somerset last week and thought it might be of interest. (I'm sure there's a 'proper' place for photos of aberrant plumage and deformed bills but I couldn't find it!)

Raptor on the Farne Islands today (UK)

We saw this brown raptor high on one of the rocky outermost Farne Islands today. Appearance suggested female Merlin but it did look a bit too big for that. Similar size (length) to nearby Razorbills. Legs out of sight, didn't fly. I don't see all that many Merlins so am unsure of the ID -...

    Feather ID Oxfordshire UK

I picked up this feather in open parkland/mixed woodland in rural Oxfordshire yesterday. It's slightly curved and just over 5 inches long. I'd love to know who it belonged to if anyone can help. Thank you. :)

    Jack Snipe? Northumberland UK

A farm-working friend encountered this little fellow while he was planting beans in one of the fields yesterday: his verbal description matched Jack Snipe but this morning he saw it again and managed a quick, not very good but clear enough for ID, photo from the tractor cab on his mobile phone...

    Sea Eagles v crofters' lambs....

From the BBC News Scotland (Highlands and Islands) website today - the result of the latest research programme. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/highlands_and_islands/8339642.stm Funny how lambs have to wear such "huge big" radio tags when the radio tags used on birds are so small and light...

    Birding from Ferries

Having travelled around many of the Scottish Islands in recent years, and also taken some trips to Ireland, I wonder how satisfactory other birders have found birding from ferries has been? Of course, many of us are "old hands" at watching from the "Scillonian", but how do other journeys...

    Killer Hedgehogs??

A non-birding friend has reported the following, apparently from today's (Scottish) "Oban Times" [23 September 2005]. "todays oban times relayed a story which confused me. aparently a family was woken in the early morning by screeching. on investigation the noise was coming from a goshawk in...
