Where do I go to ask forum for id help? Missouri

Have I done something offensive or is the forum not very active? I thought this was likely a common bird for Missouri but no one seems to be interested in helping. I have seen birds bounce their tail when they chirp a few times in the past but cannot recall their name. I think either towhee...

Advice for someone who has a hard time ID’ing birds ...

Just wondering if color blindness might be one thing that hinders him. My memory is a problem for me AND I am not equipped yet with good bins but getting my brain away from usual topics and onto birds is like meditation is for others. It brings focus to my thoughts. His motivation may be to...

Where do I go to ask forum for id help? Missouri

The bird I saw looked similar to this but I saw a white eye bar, yellow beak, and a white patch on the throat. I am pretty sure the breast was the same color as the sides under the wings and matched the towhee color on sides. The tail flicked up and down when it chirped. My bins are old and...

Where do I go to ask forum for id help? Missouri

I am just getting back into bird watching and have very little id experience. I saw a bird perched like a carolina wren on a small tree on a small limb at the edge of a big field in rural Missouri. It looked a lot lite a Corolina Wren in color but the head was black with white eye bar, white...

Eagle Nest - what is in that nest?

did not disturb I noticed that the gallery says not to post photos of nests etc. Does that include those that are from a distance taken by zooming the lens?

Eagle Nest - what is in that nest?

I couldn't tell what the Eagle was doing in the nest, but it seemed to be tending to something. Do they have eggs right now?

    Signs of spring

Killdeer Is mating Killdeer a sign of spring? I am new to this, but we got up to 85 degrees yesterday and only 34 degrees now today. Yesterday, I thought I heard some new birds, but maybe it is the same birds doing mating type of calls. I couldn't find any knew birds with my binoculars. I...

    Hawks

Well, I have not figured out how to identify the hawks that I have been seeing lately. Due to distance and other factors (being new at it), I am not sure what I have seen. I do wish I would've gotten a picture of the one that flew across Ralph's pasture today because it had a large wing...

Comment by 'Guest' in media 'Red-Bellied Woodpecker - Male'

It has been fascinating since I started. Now, I am also noticing their song - pips, squeaks, and calls! Birding is a lot of fun and educational. Loving it so far.

What bird has a white bar on the underside?

I saw a soaring bird today here in Missouri, USA. I looked at it for a couple of minutes, but I do not know what it is. Again, new at birding! What really stood out was a white bar on the wing about a third of the way from the tip, maybe less. It mostly soaring without flapping, but it did...

White Stripe on underside of wing of soaring bird

That is all I got so far. Books point to Night Hawk or Black Vulture, so far. Today, Feb. 22, it was soaring high above our back yard area. The wings seemed horizontal and the color of the bird seemed dark but as it turned to the side, the belly seemed a little lighter color - light brown...

    Does the excitement ever wane?

I am new to it and the surprises around ever corner are a thrill. So many gifts we tend to ignore in pursuit of wealth and societal measures of success. For me, success has become a proper identification of birds I see.

    Is this a Carolina Wren

I am in East Central Missouri - actually a little bit south - Franklin County to be more exact. New to birding and realized as I was reviewing my photos that I captured a photo of a wren. I have never identified a wren. Is this a Carolina Wren?

Comment by 'Guest' in media 'Northern Cardinal'

As a St. Louis Cardinal fan, this picture is especially awesome to me. Great photo. I am not a photographer, so I think this photo would be impossible for me to capture. Especially Cardinals - the males seem to spook so easily.

February 20, 2014 Killdeer and Goose?

While in town, I saw a small group of killdeer near a parking lot across from our City Lake. Not too unusual, but I had never taken the time to look at its markings and identifying it. I will need to spend some time identifying the water fowl at the City Lake because as I flipped though...

Feb 18th a windy warm up

Looks like winter might finally let go of us here in Missouri. I am anxious to see how that changes things as far as bird species. Yesterday, I saw a flock of geese flying overhead and they were flying North! I am thinking that is a good sign for us. I noticed the black-capped chickadees...

    Wow...Bald Eagle!

Big Bird 50 feet away in front yard I had a similar experience today and my heart is still racing. I think it was more likely some kind of hawk but I have not ruled out Eagle. Here is the story - this morning minding my own business and I get a glimpse out of my front window of movement. I...

Big Bird in the tree in my front yard 2/17/14

OMG! I missed it! I bird about 4 times bigger than a blue jay- Hawkish sized - landed in a low branch in my front yard! As I was relaxing in my recliner, I happened to noticed movement out of the corner of my eye. I moved the blinds a bit more and there it was. The biggest bird that I have...

Duck Creek Conservation Area in Southern Missouri

Has anyone ever went birding at Duck Creek CA? I am just wondering if it is worth the trip based on seeing birds that I don't see in a typical wooded area in Missouri. The website names some wetland types of birds. I just wonder if anyone has the experience there?
