Photographing birds at a distance and what to expect?

Hi! My camera's (Canon EOS 70D) AF has been calibrated and here are a couple of images at full size and 100% crop. Due to low light I used my Sigma 150-500 mm as it has IS. I'm pretty amazed by how good these images came out even at 100% crop. Actually, all images within the series where in...

Photographing birds at a distance and what to expect?

Roy, I've looked at some of your images on Flickr taken with your 400mm 5.6 (I´ve been following you for a while) and I see that my images are way too soft compared to yours. As you suggest, I think I have to make some test shots with a stationary object to see if I manage to fix the focus. Tom

Photographing birds at a distance and what to expect?

Hi Roy! I always shoot in RAW! And I was using single point AF. The lens has been adjusted with the camera (AFMA). The metering was set to partial. I use back button focusing. Of course, there might be a problem with my technique... As mentioned I process my images with Lightroom and might...

Photographing birds at a distance and what to expect?

Hi! I have a Canon 70D and a EF 400mm 5.6 lens which is 6 years old. I bought the lens a few weeks ago. My main goal is to make descent images of all kind of birds. The EF 400mm 5.6 is known to be one of the sharpest lenses Canon has ever made and that was the main reason why I bought it...

    Canon SX50 Specs

I´m amazed by the wonderful results you get with the SX50. Do you take the images in raw format and post-process them in any way? Tom

    Canon SX50 Specs

Canon SX50 was never supposed to be anything but a decent point and shoot camera with an extreme zoom range. And as a birdwatcher I'm more happy using SX50 for documentation than with equipment for digiscoping. I've tried both and I found the latter more difficult to use. In addition the SX50...

    Canon SX50 Specs

I'm convinced! Under good light conditions ISO80 gives the best results. This image is direct from my camera. No fixing, whatsoever. The distance was approximately 20 meters and 215 mm with 2x.

    Canon SX50 Specs

I had to try ISO80 and F8 - and I think these settings help me getting better images. What do you think?

    Canon SX50 Specs

Great shots, Jeff! For me the most annoying thing about SX50 is the self-timer button. I've never understood why this function has to be as available as it is. Hopefully, Canon have removed it with the next generation. At least it should be made configurable. Here's a few of my last pictures...

    Hi!

My name is Tom and I discovered birdforum.net a few days ago. I spend as much time as possible out in nature and my main hobby is birdwatching. Currently, I'm the leader of the local bird society which is part of Norway's Ornithological Society. My equipment is a Nikon binoculars, an Opticron...

    Canon SX50 Specs

I agree! Low light and long distances aren't what SX50 was made for. I would love having a camera able to catch what I'm watching in my spotting scope! Though, the SX50 does a descent job as a documentation camera. Today I found some swans and gulls willing to pose close and long enough for...

    Canon SX50 Specs

Thanks! I had to pick a couple of my best shots from last year. :t: Unfortunately, most of my pictures are too soft, blurred and faded. Here's a few examples. And then a pretty good one. o:)

    Canon SX50 Specs

Yesterday, I discovered birdforum(!) and this thread. I've been struggling with my SX50 for an year. Some pictures have been ok, but not as amazing as a lot of the pictures posted here. Hopefully the settings and advice from this thread will improve my images. Thanks to all! Here's a few...
