    Pearl-bordered Fritillaries Sussex

I'm heading down to Sussex next week and was planning to look for PBFs at Abbot's Wood, and possibly Rewell Wood too. Can anybody give me any advice on the best areas to search? Especially at Abbot's Wood? Private msg is fine if deemed sensitive information. Thanks :) Jonathan

    Cerro Blanco

Does anyone know the current situation at Cerro Blanco? I have a potential day there in a few weeks time, and have been told that mining operations mean that the usual areas are closed. It may be possible to access higher areas at the back of the reserve, but I'm not sure what the habitat or...

    April Moths

The year continues to grind away with cold nights still. I finally decided to bite the bullet and run the trap last night for the first time in 2013. The results? 5 Hebrew Characters and 2 Common Quakers. It's a start!

    RFI Brisbane area

Hi I'm passing through Brisbane in late August en route to PNG and am hoping to chase down a few target species. My current plan is to drive north and bird Inskip Point and a few other areas. Any help would be appreciated! My primary targets are: Black-breasted Buttonquail - this was one of...

    macro Peterborough

This was in the trap a few nights ago - superficially like a Vine's Rustic but with pronounced cross lines and small/narrow-winged. I can't see what else it can be - intiially I thought PMW but it lacks the dark spots on the trailing edge. Any help would be welcome!

One from last night, Peterborough UK

This moth was in the garden trap last night and has got me stumped. It's very worn, but looks distinctive. My assumption is a worn Marbled Beauty - this is a common moth here but I've never had one that was so pale. Is this what it is - all thoughts welcome! The forewing length is 11 mm.

    Dioryctria

This stunning Dioryctria was in the garden trap last night. It is particularly well-marked so I'm hoping it can be IDed without gen det, although I do still have the moth. Any thoughts would be very welcome - I've only ever had one Dioryctria schuetzeella in the garden before. That individual...

    Pammene regiana/trauniana

This micro was on the trap last night and I'm guessing that it's one of the two above. Both would be new for me, and both are good county records but I'm confused. The dorsal spot looks perfect for trauniana but are the costal streaks too narrow? Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. I...

    Beauty

Is this just a slightly odd Willow Beauty? It has clear black hindwing spots and stood out as different. Views welcome, although I suspect I already know what the views will be :-O

    Brecks plant

This was in the Brecks yesterday and I can't for the life of me remember what it is! I'm sure I used to know...

    Stilt-legged Fly

I posted earlier about a Stilt-legged Fly from the moth trap. I have managed to take an admittedly rather dodgy photo. It looks distinctive enough but I'm struggling to find much info on this group so any help would be much appreciated!

    Micropezidae

I had my first stilt-legged fly last night, in the garden moth trap. It looks very distinctive with two broad black transverese bands across the wings and banded legs. A photo would prove tricky - does anyone know which species this is? as far as I know, it's a small family in the UK.

    Caterpillar ID

These caterpillars were sheltering under a fallen log at the Wirral Coastal Park, Cheshire at the weekend. Can anyone tell me what they are? Thanks!

    Micro for ID

The new season is getting underway and already I've hit a blank with these two plain micros. Both are worn, and both pretty nondescript. They ring a bell, but I can't pin them down! Any help would be appreciated.

    Comprehensive Chile Nov 2011

As a latinophile, I had long featured Chile on my list of places to visit - although there are no antbirds, the tapaculos more than compensate and there are some other real megas to be seen. I had birded Argentinian Patagonia 10 years ago but had missed some key species which are much more...

    Fungus on lawn for ID

Hi This was pushing up through the lawn this morning. Cap d is approx 3cm, stubby stalkm with violaceous tones. The cap is very smooth and silky/waxy in feel. No obvious smell (but I have a cold..) Any help would be gratefully appreciated even to genus.

    Fungus from beech wood, Hunts

This was growing under beech near Peterborough. The cap is 3cm in d; the stem 30mm x 7mm. Any help would be appreciated!

    Blewit?

This very distinctive-looking fungus was fruiting in one of the garden borders. The stems are as purple as they look and are very fibrous when torn. The gills are also quite lilac and I had come to the conclusion that it is Wood Blewit. But the spore print overnight is cream rather than pinky...

    Garden fungus ID

This group of fruiting fungi has just appeared under a large dead willow in the garden. I'm new to fungus ID and wondered if it might be a Cortinarius sp but I'm stuck to be honest. Any ideas? Cap diameter was up to 50mm approx and stem length approx 160mm.

    ? Garden Carpet

Garden Carpet is a common moth in my garden trap. This individual was caught earlier in the week and is a stunningly beautiful moth. You can see why it caught my eye! My initial thoughts of something interesting have been dashed by the pattern being off for anything except an extremely...

    Macro Peterborough

This looks swift-y but the wing pattern doesn't really match. It's the size of a female Orange Swift.

    Heliomyzid fly?

This is no doubt a long shot and I may even be well off on the family. I keyed out this fly with the excellent Dipterid families guide and arrived at Heliomyzidae. Can it be allocated to species? And am I even right on the family?

    Soldierfly

This soldierfly was in the moth trap last along with two others of the same species. The most striking feature are the spines on the scutellum, but I'm not sure how many species show these. I'm hoping one of the invertebrate experts on the forum might be able to help me ID to species if possible.;)
