    Prodigal daughter returning

Thanks everyone, it's really fun to be back. Need to take time to browse all the fora that have absolutely BALLOONED since I was last here. Four more days of working and then I'll decide whether I want to STAY not working or formally retire. Lotsa time to browse then! LOL!

LOL, no kidding! Thanks for that, Niels. No scope this trip, just bins.

    Prodigal daughter returning

Totes kidding! :king: But it has been several years since I was last online here and soooooo happy to see it still going strong! And also to pick brains about Egypt birding in February so figured I'd better make a donation, too, while I was at it. Also nice to see some familiar names still...

    Nile Cruise birding

Will be going to Egypt and Jordan in early February 2020, prolly only birder in our small, private group but want to take advantage of every minute I'm there. First time in Egypt so any and all advice gratefully welcomed! I know we'll be doing the obligatory Giza desert, Nile Cruise, not sure...

North American Birders - Great Backyard Bird Count Feb. 18th-21st, 2011

I spoke a bit too soon in saying that nothing unusual turned up in this year's count for my location: An adult female Northern Harrier put in a soaring appearance over the greenbelt, which is about the only open ground (except for the local golf course) in the nearby forest. She returned the...

North American Birders - Great Backyard Bird Count Feb. 18th-21st, 2011

It's been really "hard" birding this year here in high-elevation California, too. Wind, blizzarding, fog. Jeesh! Not nearly the variety of spp and nothing unusual. Spent 6.5 hours today and only netted 18 spp. Weather will be much better tomorrow (once the fog burns off) so hopefully sightings...

URGENT: Baby Birds In Rain, No MOM. What do we do?

What was the outcome of the nest removal? Did the nestlings survive? If so, did you replace the nest where you removed it? Did an adult bird return?

    Steller's Jay feeding behavior question

Isn't it amazing how easily trainable we humans are? LOL! Where I lived in AZ, the Steller's Jays there would come to my bedroom window if I wasn't up early enough for their liking and wait for the peanuts to be tossed into the yard. I do find the scrubs far more gregarious and less reticent...

    Steller's Jay feeding behavior question

Yeah, I do kind of worry about that sometimes because lots of people are finicky about their "gardens" and view whole peanuts as litter. But after one good wind, all the empty (or full) shells blow somewhere else anyway, and the birds seem to find them -- and if they don't, the squirrels and...

    Steller's Jay feeding behavior question

Um, I'm a little confused. :h?: Peanuts don't grow into trees but into fairly short plants, around two feet tall. Also, I wouldn't have thought roasted seeds/nuts would germinate -- raw ones, possibly, but raw peanuts should never, ever be fed to birds due to the potential for aflatoxin...

    Steller's Jay feeding behavior question

Hmmm, interesting point. Like maybe a bird just grabbed whatever it could before being scared off by more incoming (birds, squirrels) and then came back for a "better" peanut... Wish I'd kept better watch last fall when it was easy to tell the sub-adults from mature birds to see if there was...

    Steller's Jay feeding behavior question

LOL, yep, there sure are. Hope one of them is a bird psychologist so we can find out what the birds' thought processes are in doing this. I know, I know, that's a bit too much to hope for. :t:

    Steller's Jay feeding behavior question

Year-round. Of all the resident and migratory species, the Steller's is the only one I've observed returning food to exchange.

    Steller's Jay feeding behavior question

After doing a search here on BF for this behavior and finding no reference to it, thought I'd ask if anyone here has any info. Cornell's site doesn't mention this, either. Steller's and other jays, when selecting whole (unshelled, roasted) peanuts will systematically pick up one after another...

How do i steal my neghbors gold finches....errr

No need for apology, Joe, I didn't take it that way at all. That's why I love the little emoticons because hopefully it takes the onus off all of our posts, mine included. :t: I would like to reiterate something, though, that I may not have called enough attention to, and that's the use of...

How do i steal my neghbors gold finches....errr

Please re-read post #12. We are talking about niger seed that is both sterile and "live." "Nyger" is the politicized spelling of a word whose original spelling (niger) is perfectly appropriate considering that one of the world's resources is (or at least was) Nigeria, not Nygeria. :t:

How do i steal my neghbors gold finches....errr

I would not recommend offering salt of any kind unless, as etudiant pointed out, (1) you want the vegetation to die wherever the salt falls AND (2) you offer a source of fresh water for the birds. Grit (broken/ground up shell) can be purchased almost anywhere birdseed is sold. Also, doesn't...

How do i steal my neghbors gold finches....errr

Not to be a wet blanket on the "live niger seed" argument, but it's still a non-native (to North America) invasive that will sprout and will create mats of rooted plants that will mold if not kept picked up all the time. Also, I'm a little leery of any commercial site that emphatically claims...

    Two Hummingbirds, California.

According to Sibley's "big book" and Williamson's Hummingbirds of North America, this is a classic immature Anna's female. This bird is fluffed up and the eyebrow isn't as well defined as the perfect photos/drawings the guides depict. I agree, the white dot behind the eye is not diagnostic for...

    Two Hummingbirds, California.

I'd go with Anna's on the second. The head looks too large and the bill doesn't look nearly long enough for Black-chinned.

Hawk 2 - US, Seattle Washington

Sorry, BobnBernie, but the feathers are raised on the right bird in your photo comparison, thus giving that concave indent above the beak. If the Cooper's feathers were raised, you'd see the exact same thing -- but more importantly, and more diagnostically correct, you'd see the hackles raised...

    Red-eyed, green-winged, six-legged bug

Thanks very much, everyone. Looks like it is a katydid. Which I think is only fair as it is my name. ;) Actually, a couple of friends here in PMC said a katydid, too, when I showed them the photo. Not that they're experts, but they have lived here for decades and "see loads" of them every...
