    White-banded Carpet?

Sorry about the rubbish photo but this does appear to be a White-banded Carpet. According to Waring & Townsend though it would be quite unusual in my part of North West Essex. I'm still pretty convinced though unless someone can put me right. This was caught on 27 August.

    micro confirmation

Looking back at my outstanding 'unidentifieds', I found this from 26th August #1 and#2). I think it's celypha lacunana. However, I have another record for last year which looks similar but not identical which I also had as c. lacunana (#3). Could somebody put me straight please?

    Common Marbled Carpets

These were in my trap last night. They're both Common Marbled Carpets, am I right? #2 I'm rather unsure of, could somebody put me right please? Also I had my first Ruby Tiger last night; isn't it rather late? David

    Some micros to check please

Micros seem to have packed in for the year at my trap, but these are some from late August that I'm trying to catch up with. #1 and #2 are different moths but look like the same species, #3 is probably too poor a picture for id - it was about 1cm in length- a tortrix? I think #4 is Agriphila...

No micros, but what are these?

Didn't get any micros in the trap last night. Do they stop flying earlier than the macros? These are two that have stumped me for a couple of weeks; caught 26th August in Essex. Any ideas welcome..

Recent grass moths for id please

I've had lots of Chryoteuchia culmella and Crambus pascuella through the summer but I think they should have ended by now. Are any of these just worn individuals of the above or completely different species? The range of appearance from fresh to worn is so much that I'm really struggling. They...

    Elephant Hawk Moth caterpillar

Thought I'd post these pics of Elephant Hawk Moth caterpillar which I found browsing on Purple Loosestrife in my wildlife garden today. Quite a character!

    A crambid, but which one?

Well, I'm assuming it is because it looks very like several others. I think it is Agriphila straminella; it has a single stripe and is very plain. Incidentally, the micro id sticky seems to be missing some posts at the end- not sure if anyone is still adding to it? Some pictures of similar...

More micros from Essex for id

#1 Could be a very worn Eudonia mercurella? #2 don't know #3 #4 One of the gracillariinae family?

    More micros for id confirmation

#1 could be pammene fasciana #2 looks like a pyralid but I've a nasty feeling someone's going to tell me this is a caddis fly. It looks quite distinctive but I can't find it on a trawl through UK Moths.

    Is this a moth?

I haven't seen a moth looking anything like this metallic black one, which has me wondering if indeed it is a moth. The trouble is, my starting point is usually Uk Moths families and quite often I can't even guesss what the family is. Can anyone suggest a better way of narrowing down the field a...

    Another tortrix for id

Catching up with ids for recent trappings, I keep coming unstuck on the tortrixes (tortrices?). From UK moths this looks like Pandemis cinnamomeana, but this doesn't necessarily fit the garden habitat or flight period (this was caught on 10th Aug). Is this actually a Dark Fruit-tree Tortrix...

    Two more for id please

Both of these moths seem to be very worn, particuarly 1 & 2 (same moth). That's my excuse anyway because I can't find these anywhere! First moth (1 &2) was taken in the trap last week, second moth (3) was caught on 28th July. David

    Brown House Moths

Not very exciting I know, but these two which I've been calling Brown House are clearly different. Can anyone help?

    Which pugs?

Are these Double-striped Pugs? This species seems quite variable and yet these 2 don't really look like anything else. Is there a diagnostic feature to look for or are these too worn for that?

    Tortrix help please

I think I've got Chequered Fruit-tree Tortrix here, but then again it could be Carnation? Not really sure; can anybody confirm please?

    3 for id/confirmation

No.1 - I posted this before; is it Agyrotaenia ljungliana? It looks too short in the wing. No.2 ; No idea No.3 ; I think this is Purple Thorn but I didn't manage to get a picture with the wings open before it flew off.

    Great Green Bush-Cricket puzzle

I had this in my garden at the weekend on the buddleia bush. It seemed quite lively but with only one hind leg and no wings I presume it wouldn't survive for long. Would the leg 'loss' be a mutation or an injury? There doesn't seem to be any damage. David Avis

    Three micros causing trouble...

Number 1 I've had regularly over the last month and I've had it down as Agyrotaenia lyungliana. However when I look at all the pictures of it together I'm not so sure. Number 2 looks very distinctive but I can't pick it up on the sticky. Number 3 is from an awkward angle but it's the only one I...

    Where's the micro sticky gone?

I've been away and now I'm back things seem different in the forum. Where have the threads been moved to? I used that micro sticky thread all the time and now I can't find it! If I sound panic-stricken, then I am!

Help please- is this a Brocade?

I've searched through lots of similar-looking moths on UK Moths etc, but I can't find this one. Unfortunately I found it dead in the area of my trap this afternoon. Could someone point me in the right direction please? Thanks, David

    Micros for ID please

These were trapped a couple of nights ago. I'm struggling to find anything resembling. Apologies that the photos are so poor, they were just record shots but the moths flew before I could get anything better. 2 and 3 are the same moth.

    Tortrix for confirmation please

Got this one a couple of nights ago. I'm thinking [I]Clepsis consimilana[I]. Would anyone like to confirm or otherwise? Sorry by the way about the awful colour of the lid it's sitting on. David

Garden Grass Veneers- what are they?

I'm having a little id crisis tonight because looking back through my earlier ids I notice that I Have some micros down as 'Garden Grass Veneer'. Now, I can't find a reference at all in the stickys or on UK Moths, so I don't know where I got the id from! Is it a generic name for a number of...
