1st March was the date of your first Chiffchaff sighting on the patch in 2014, the earliest return date in your records :t:

    Beaconwood and the Winsel

Last year's New Year Project Last year I put together a series of photographs showing the bluebells grow. See them here. Doesn't feel so long until Spring!

    Birding in Worcestershire

Sorry, it's not related to Croome, Hawfinches or the photos posted, but I have made an interactive map of birdforum threads, mostly in Worcestershire, Warkwickshire and the West Midlands, so you don't need to search through county pages to find a thread to discuss your touristic birding: Click...

I've pm'ed you with a link. I've looked at Wheatear's arrival date, as it seemed to consistently waver early then late, then back to early. It could easily be by chance, but all 5 arrivals occured between a New Moon and 1st Quarter moon in your data. If this is not by chance the first...

Comparison of arrival dates Hope you don't mind Dave, but I've put your data into calendars and colours. It helps me to digest it and possibly will for others too. :t:

    Birds in Fernhill Heath

(From Coney Thread) Potentially a bird from the same family group as Dave's in Coney.

    Beaconwood and the Winsel

Today Today's visit added 5 new species to my reserve list for the year: blackcap, sparrowhawk, mistle thrush, feral pigeon and pheasant. It was good to chat to two WWT members on the way out who are hoping to bring a party to see the deer later in the year. Bluebells - most beginning to grow...

    Beaconwood and the Winsel

Another visit today. Quite a different dynamic to previous visits. No Redwing, no Goldcrest and only one Great Spotted Woodpecker. Lots of Grey Squirrels (usually very few) and the deer are growing antlers. Bluebells are coming on. Daffodils beginning to flower. Generally far more Spring...

    Coney Meadow and Adjoining Areas

Welcome to birdforum Bill and Margaret. From what Dave (Woodchat) reports, the SW Droitwich area is brim full of quality birds, so glad to hear someone else is out there enjoying them. :t:

Arrow Valley Lake and Park (Redditch)

Surprised noone else has posted a picture of the bird. I also got some uninspirational video showing the bird up close, but relaxed, as joggers, dog walkers and other park users continually passed by.

    Beaconwood and the Winsel

Pictures in the snow from yesterday: The birds were very active and viewable, but the light was too poor for anything better than record shots.

    Beaconwood and the Winsel

After deciding to visit more frequently this year, I have visited the reserve 6 times since the New Year. I have recorded the following... at least 5 times: Blackbird, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Robin, Wren, Goldfinch, Carrion Crow, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Buzzard, Woodpigeon, Redwing, Nuthatch...

    Beaconwood and the Winsel

JTB has come back to me and says general consensus is Great Tit. Thought it'd be a common bird making an odd noise! Thanks John :t:

    Beaconwood and the Winsel

Sorry for the poor sound quality Keith, can't be helped. The only recording device I had was the voice recorder on my phone. The bird first calls 4 seconds in, the first few seconds are just the A38 and M5 rumbling in the background. Thanks for taking the time to listen to it :t:

    Beaconwood and the Winsel

I can't id this call. Yesterday on the path between 'The Great Oak' and 'The Great Elm'. It's probably something very common, but I don't know this one! Could anyone help?

    Beaconwood and the Winsel

Finding out about the reserve I’ve been interested for some time about what the Winsel meant and where it officially becomes Beaconwood. The trust page says Beaconwood was cleared and replanted with oak 120 years ago and the Winsel was planted around 1930. This website has a 1921 map that...

Thanks. There's no need to post maps, but thank you for the offer. I'll pop back when warblers are about! Noted. Thank you.

    Birds in Fernhill Heath

Welcome to birdforum Dave. 45 species is an impressive count for a garden in your first 6 months. If you have specific locations to recommend that'd be great, else if I'm in the area I'll report back on what I see in Fernhill Heath generally on this thread :t: Local reserves where you could...

    Coney Meadow and Adjoining Areas

I visited Coney Meadow earlier. Very muddy! :eek!: Happy to see a Mistle Thrush nice and close along the canal. I didn't see any open water within the meadow at all. Is there access to the reserve except the path that runs parallel to the canal towpath?

    Beaconwood and the Winsel

I visited the reserve for the first time since Summer earlier. As usual, I saw noone and the paths are lightly worn. Several trees have lost limbs, one or two trees have fallen, probably due to the New Year storms. Highlights for me today included 2 muntjac deer, and a tree with a Great Spotted...

    Upton Warren

Whilst with Dad at the Moors I noted down 4 Mute Swan rings: (all Orange) 74R, 88S, 36N and 58R. I don't know how to access ring data, but thought it might be worth sharing.

    Worcestershire Butterflies,Moths and Dragonflies

Sorry about the photo quality - it was taken in near darkness with a hand-held torch over it. Unfortunately the photos on the website look nothing like the louse. Thanks for your help though Dan.

    Worcestershire Butterflies,Moths and Dragonflies

Louse This little louse crept out of the Kale we cut for Christmas dinner. It's not the standard woodlouse you see - it had a light-coloured edge and it's back two pairs of legs were significantly longer than the others. Does anyone know what it might be?
