    Yorkshire Birding

Swillington/St Aidans has been outstanding for the last few weeks - I had whoopers and a Bewick last week, along with black-necked grebe in beautiful plumage and later still short eared owl around. Some pix are on the rare bird alert gallery for anyone interested. Bittern booming too.

    St Aidans

aka New Swillinton ings, was in cracking form today with a Bewick swan among about 25 whoopers on the main lake, at least two black necked grebes, bittern booming, black headed gulls going berserk, peregrine on the fringes in the evening, plus at least three short eared owls doing a fly-past.

Just to add, after further thought Can one be arrested for smearing a tree in Roundhay Park with peanut butter; and Will it also attract aggressive dogs with big teeth?

    Roundhay Park Bird News

another possible sighting of lesser spotted woodie in Roundhay Park today, in tree next to bus stop between entrance gate and Lido car park. Looked good size-wise but couldn't get close enough look, or a pic. Looked as if it flew into garden over road.

The Strid, near Bolton Abbey, I would say, and I've also seen them in the Dalby Forest area, between Hackness and Forest Drive, in the streams down in the valley. They are a little way away at the Strid, so you'd need a fair length lens. Possibly you might see them in the Malham region too.

    Off to Bempton cliffs

I think the shorter lens is OK. I found there that the seabirds in flight r pretty much level with you if you find the right spot and pretty close. Shots down the cliff don't really work so well. I imagine there aren't many if any puffins within reasonable range yet. May get lucky with a short...

very noisy and quite showy nuthatch in the driveway trees at Parc Mont in Park avenue today... re the woodpecker I saw the other day, pretty sure it was the lesser spotted. Doubt there'll be many juvenile greats about at this time, for one thing. Haven't seen it since, of course.

    Roundhay Park Bird News

will try again tomorrow with camera, weather permitting. Had the impression it was bigger than sparrow size, smaller than song thrush. Size is hard to judge, though, with single bird. Red cap, couldn't see if there were white patches on body.

    Roundhay Park Bird News

A comparatively confiding woodpecker on a low tree between Park Ave and the main lake, couple of hundred yards before the Lakeside cafe, on Friday - thought at first it might be a lesser spotted, but probably a juvenile GSW

    Spurn or Flamborougb?

I'd say wait for an easterly wind for both. Spurn can be worth the walk down to the point (about an hour and a quarter each way) as you will see fantastic raptor\small bird habitat with many dead tree perches. There was merlin there hunting on Friday. I've also seen short eared owls close-up...

Old Fall and New Fall are one and the same - no idea why it has both names. Various warblers in and around there as of a week or so ago. At the moment it's worth checking the willows by the golf course near the lighthouse - I've seen yellow brows, firecrest and large numbers of gold crest in...

First Day out with the Nikon D5

Neil, would be interested in your views on my experiences. I'm now in a position to post some opinions on the D5, having been using it now for a couple of months. Like every camera, it has its quirks, and it takes a while to find them and take them into account when shooting and, importantly...
