    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

Had a quick break in Cyprus, which the guides said would be great for birds, but it was intensely disappointing. I was there more for the archaeology, but even on that sort of trip I usually get something fun, like hoopoe in North Macedonia or green bee-eater in Egypt. I think I only saw about...

Two passerines (warbler/wheatear?), Lycabettus Hill, Athens, 25 September

Coal tit makes sense, there were some around, the angle definitely fooled me though.

Two passerines (warbler/wheatear?), Lycabettus Hill, Athens, 25 September

Think the warbler is a willow warbler but I did not hear it sing. The second one is bemusing me because it looks a bit like a desert wheatear but that's not an Athenian bird. I only got the one shot as I didn't even know I had seen it - I was trying to photograph a tit (coal, I think)...

    Most memorable bird encounters

In Athens a couple of years ago, girlfriend is from there, and we're walking through the park near the Benaki museum. I hear a loud raaaak and am thinking "magpie". But it's too loud and too insistent and I say to her, "I think it's a parakeet". She thinks I'm mad but we go chasing after the...

    Your most unlikely birding experience

I've only ever got one new spot when I've been urinating. In the nature reserve at the top left of Singapore. Toilets do not have a roof so while I was relieving myself I could stare into the forest over the wall. Where I saw a pair of laced woodpeckers. (the pun writes itself)

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

In my attempt to get the least impressive tick in the thread, with a poor sighting of a very common bird...sparrowhawk. Now am wondering if I've seen them before and assumed they were kestrels.

Is this a bird's nest?, Parnithi, near Athens, Greece

I'm guessing coincidence, she's not someone who spots birds. The smallest wildlife she spotted on that walk was a deer.

Is this a bird's nest?, Parnithi, near Athens, Greece

Cool, thanks. Thought it was a bit weird.

Is this a bird's nest?, Parnithi, near Athens, Greece

Friend of mine took this pic, then heard chirruping inside, and backed away carefully. Before she mentioned the voices I assumed it was a web of some sort. Is this a nest, and, if so, a bird's nest? It's quite high up in altitude, near mountain forests.

Songbird in Poros, Greece, Jan 2023

Thought it was a flycatcher but it bounced around the rocks for a while looking like a wheatear - red tail undersid should help but I've no idea...

    Upupa antaios

Aristophanes' Birds (420s BC) is pretty clear. When two men meet Tereus, they burst into laughter at his "triple crest" and beak, and ask if he is a peacock. I doubt a lapwing would generate that sort of reaction. That's leaving aside the onomatopoeia of έποψ.

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

Last of two dozen from a trip to the Singapore Grand Prix: a white-bellied sea-eagle over Marina Bay.

    A chiff, or a chaff

Somewhat disturbing site in the middle of Worksop today - half a chiffchaff... Seemed to be singing and flying like a good 'un. I assume it has moulted its tail feathers, but it also seemed only to have one leg... Birth defect or accident survivor?

    Your WORST identifiable photos

It is indeed non-European...I understand that this is quite a common one, but it was the only one I've ever seen.

Grey-backed passerine, Roseau, Dominica, 10 December

Yes, I thought there was yellow there as well. There were plenty of grey kingbirds around elsewhere but they did not sit like that, they were sort of bolder.

Grey-backed passerine, Roseau, Dominica, 10 December

Got from a coach, when really looking at the ostensibly headless dove on the right, but I'm more confused about the little chap on the left...
