Canon 100 - 400 mark ii latest thoughts

If the closer focus means you will use the lens more then it may well be worth the upgrade - not all decisions should be about image quality. And don't forget the MKii has 4 stops IS, the MkI has barely 2. I presume from the phrasing of your question that you have the Mk1 lens, so if closer...

    Keeping bigger birds away

I would agree with Delia - big brids are generally bolder so if you are too drastic you may risk scaring the smaller ones away. You could do things like keeping specialsied feeders away from the perching/feeding options for the bigger birds - bt I have noticed in our garden when the feeders...

    Eagles at Haweswater!

This post from last week mentions one eagle being mobbed by buzzards. http://www.manchesterbirding.activeboard.com/t11710928/haweswater-and-environs-golden-eagle/ There are several travel companies using 'the only golden eagle in England' as a bait for customers. Would they pass the chance of...

Bird ID - a dodgy description of its call

Nope - they are too chirrupy or 'sing song'. The owl is the best bet but I can't work out which one is the most likely.

Upgrade dilemma - which route would you take?

Would the bird be there long enoughto use magnified LiveView for focusing?

Bird ID - a dodgy description of its call

Thank you both. All the starling calls I have played are too 'coarse' and has a grating element to it, but that does not preclude mimicry as you say. The only thing I would say goes against a starling was the 'size' of the sound. So scrabbling for more comparisons... If you think of a collared...

    Sony Telephoto lens debate

A good lens will certainly help - longer focal length will need less cropping but a better quality 200mm lens will give a more details image and that itself will enable more cropping. But to give you a realistic impression of what you can achieve, there is a direct relationhip between image size...

Bird ID - a dodgy description of its call

When out in the local park, I have hear an unusual call and it is bugging me because I don't recognise it. The park is in East Cheshire and is a real mix of terrain: it has a medium sized river flowing round the edge with a decent amount of woodland and on the other side of the river is open...

Upgrade dilemma - which route would you take?

Thank you every one for your comments and I am sort of pleased to see that there is no 'easy path' so at least I am not mssing anything obvious! I took out the 7D/100-400 with the 1.4TC today and I have thought very much along the lines of OWen and Roger - am I willing to take a substantially...

    Doing what woodpeckers do...

On holiday in Musoka, Canada A woodpecker flew in about 30 feet above our cabin porch and I had several goes at getting him 'in action' Canon 7D with 100-400L

Switch from Canon equioment to smaller system

One of the regulars on another site I frequent had the same issues - he was having problems with the weight of his full Canon gear so moved to Olympus E-M5 (then E-M1) with the macro lens and 100-300. When that started taking its toll he moved to the Nikon V2 and seems to be very happy with it...

Can't tell if my lens is broke or if I'm rubbish

Your pictures from 22-Mar are a decent set. The hovering gull is spot on; the mallard is perfect focus on the beak, but the shallow depth of field means the eye is very slightly out of focus; and similarly the black headed gull the focus is on the near side of the body which means again the eye...

Upgrade dilemma - which route would you take?

Hi Isaac Thank you for your reply. 1- My maximum budget would be about £2,700 (I can get a secnod hand 300mm f2.8L Mk1 for that) if the quality is worth it 2- I tend to do general wildlife and birds in flight. My summer obsession is kingfishers and because of its location it tends to be in...

Upgrade dilemma - which route would you take?

My current set up is all-Canon with 7D (original) with 100-400L (original). I am looking at different upgrade paths and stalled myself to a standstill: 7D (original) and buy the 500mm - this is the gold standard and not sure I can stretch that far 7D (original) with 100-400 Mk II 7D (original)...

Hello from sunny (?) Manchester, UK

I just thought I would say 'hi' to everybody. I am based in NW UK and have been photographing birds for around 3years now, and got into it when trying to nail some elusive kingfishers in the local parks (fast little critters, aren't they!). From the often fruitless hours spent on the bank I...
