    kb57's 2024 Year List

Happy New Year everyone - hope you all have a great year's birding. This year I have a simple resolution, which is to get out birding a lot more often than I did last year, even if it just means a quick visit to a local site. To help me along and define a target, I'm going to try and achieve...

    Quinta do Ludo access restrictions

I posted this on the year list thread recently, but thought it worth repeating on the Portugal thread. The access from the northern part of the Quinta do Ludo saltpans to São Lourenço golf course has been closed off by the landowner. This apparently occurred this summer, and was in response...

October 14 - October Big Day

Just a reminder that tomorrow (Oct 14) is the eBird October Big Day: October Big Day—14 Oct 2023 - eBird - it is also World Migratory Bird Day. There's also a night vision camera up for grabs if you live in USA or Canada (or a pair of binoculars if you don't..). Did a search on BF and it...

Alternatives to Twitter / X for birders

I've been using Twitter for a number of years now - for birding info / photos, sport and politics - but like many since its takeover by a megalomaniac billionaire, am starting to look at alternatives - especially if they start charging. I tried to download Hive Social app the other day, but...

    KB57s 2023 year list

Happy New Year everyone and welcome to my 2023 year list thread. As in previous years, IOC format (when I can get it right) for birds plus incidental mammals. Also as before, I'm trying not to twitch rarities unless severely provoked (cf. northern mockingbird, pied wheatear...), and trying not...

Diving ducks - Gardom Lake, BC, Canada - 27 Sep

Another couple of pics sent by my partner for ID. They're definitely diving ducks because she saw them diving, but beyond that I haven't got a clue. Not sure anyone else can help either due to the poor quality image (not helped by WhatsApp compressing them further), although there's definitely...

Blue-winged or cinnamon teal?? Salmon Arm, BC, Canada - 24 Sep

Another species sent by my partner which I have zero experience of - the black bill has led to my thinking its a blue-winged teal, which was my initial ID - but it does seem rather long and shoveler-like so perhaps it's a cinnamon? Both species recorded on eBird from this site.

Greater Yellowlegs? Salmon Arm, BC, Canada, 24 Sep

Sent by my partner, I think the size and robustness of the bill make this a greater yellowlegs, but as I have zero experience of this species and have been too lazy to go twitch lessers when they've been around locally, I thought I'd better check...

North Okanagan, BC, Canada - birding guide recommendations

After many years of deliberation, my partner is finally getting round to visiting an old friend in Canada this coming October. She has zero knowledge of North American birds, having only ever visited Canada once before, over 30 years ago, and has asked me to help her find out if there are...

    Goodbye Nature's Home!

Working from home today and trying to concentrate, so didn't take much notice when the postman delivered the RSPB magazine...took it out and leafed through - it seemed to have much more content, much of which seemed a little more detailed and potentially interesting than of late...fewer adverts...

1972 County bird report - which species is this?

From Birds in Northumbria 1972: 'A resident, commonest in SE Northumberland, but gradually spreading to the North and West. The westerly expansion was illustrated by the occurrence of three singing males at Burnhopefield (sic.) and birds at Norham and Stamfordham, all apparently new areas...

    KB57s 2022 year list

As in previous years, I'm putting an asterisk next to species not seen in the past year, with any lifers in bold. I'm hoping for a lot of asterisks, as my 2021 total of 153 (129 I think in Britain) was my lowest for a long time. Not likely to get many lifers though, as I don't have any big...

Denmark objects to control of bottom trawling in Dogger Bank

This is one fishing dispute where I'm on the side of the UK government: https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/nov/17/denmark-accuses-uk-of-breaking-brexit-fishing-deal-over-trawling-ban Basically Denmark wants to carry on bottom-trawling the Dogger Bank for sandeels to make into feed for...

    Sparrowhawks in coastal habitats

I was walking along the south pier near the mouth of the Coquet Estuary in Amble, Northumberland yesterday evening, when my partner spotted a raptor perched near the end of the north pier. I was surprised to see it was a juvenile (or possibly female) sparrow hawk, which proceeded to fly south...

    Turtle doves in North Yorkshire

I'm mulling over going for the albatross over the next few days and noted that a certain well-known pub garden in North Yorkshire isn't a million miles from my route south. My partner has never seen a turtle dove in UK, but said she thought she'd read on Twitter that they hadn't been around...

    BBC - Australia - Earth's Magical Kingdom

Watched this on BBC on Sunday, good enough to make us put off Line of Duty for an hour. Think I've just added Palm Cockatoo to my bucket list; also great footage of black kites doing their fire-starting thing....and Barry Humphries making a pretty good narrator, at least the script names /...

March for March 11,000 step birding

Day 1/31: March 01 Feeling particularly slothful one day last month, I signed up for the Prostate Cancer UK 'March for March' 11,000 step a day challenge. I stuck in £50 to show some commitment, and will proceed to hassle my friends and family for cash over the next 31 days. For once I haven't...

Is the future of birding electric?

I'm kicking off this thread in response to a couple of questions posed in the Rare Birds forum about the possible impact of the upcoming requirement in UK (and elsewhere) to phase out internal combustion engine (ICE) cars and make us all drive electric vehicles (EVs). I've not attempted to...

Arjan Dwarshuis Big Year (English) on Vimeo

I'm not sure this has been announced elsewhere on Bird Forum, but those who followed Arjan Dwarshuis in his 2016 world Big Year record might be interested in this: https://player.vimeo.com/video/402545544 His Big Year film now has a version with English subtitles and narration. KB57s 2021 list

I usually start my year list thread off with some sort of statement of intent for the coming year, but the best thing I can say about 2021 is that the bar is set pretty low when it comes to beating 2020 (in bird listing and life terms...). Nevertheless, only a few days into the year and things...

    kb57's 2020 list

After last year didn't turn out as I expected and hoped in any respect (some ways better, some worse..), I'm not making any predictions for this year, other than to hope nothing bad happens and I get to enjoy watching some birds. As with my past lists, lifers in bold, and I might reinstate the...

Are year lists getting less popular with BF viewers?

As a relatively recent member of BF, I've embraced the idea over the past few years of making my (admittedly not very impressive) year listing efforts public. I also enjoy reading other people's lists, and must admit to making a slightly sneaky comparison with the number of views as a test of...

    Tanagers, El Paujil, Colombia

Two more lowland forest species I'm struggling to ID - both seen March 17, Pro Aves El Paujil reserve, Colombia (1) I'm not even sure this is a tanager? (2) Is this a Swallow Tanager? I didn't get much else on it other than what's shown in the photo, but the picture seems to show some...

Kiskadee and flycatcher, El Paujil, Colombia

Two Tyrannidae from lowland forest at the edge of the Magdalena Valley, Colombia, taken on my recent visit on 17 March (and holding up my trip report...) (1) I've had this down as Great Kiskadee since I saw it, but am having a crisis of confidence in the black striped head / yellow breast...

9 days in Colombia, March 2019

I decided at relatively short notice to take myself off on a birding holiday while my partner was also away on a non-birding holiday in Cape Town with her friend. I picked one of the things on my birding 'bucket list' she was least bothered about sharing (experiencing a cock-of-the-rock lek)...
