When do you need a tripod? Zoom level etc.

Posting here instead of tripod thread. I've read various threads about cameras and zoom levels and (as usual) I'm a bit confused. I still think in old 35mm terms. My Nikon D40X has a 55-200 mm lens. I understand that on this configuration, 50 mm is approximately 1x so 200 mm is approximately...

A bit confrontational, luckily ime long enough in the tooth to treat it with the contempt it deserves and just use the ignore button.

You will find it will be different for different people, up to a couple of years ago i never used a tripod hand holding 600mm no problem, its gone downhill now.

    AF fine tune

While mike is right about iso9000 high iso can be ok for record shots with some pp work, Nikon Z50 DSC_2842 by electric.mike, on Flickr

    AF fine tune

The only way i found that worked for me to fine tune was, use something like a match box @600mm wide open on say short grass, this will indicate how much the focus is out.

Another one for bringing the focus point forward a fraction

Sony RX10 1V the new boy.

It was back in 2017 this camera caught my eye so i started this thread, i have finally had to admit my struggle with normal gear, even m4/3 so have taken the plunge and changed. Get it tomorrow but with the weather and lockdown it may be a while before i get to use it.

Too many camera options, don't know what any of it means. Suggest a camera you know works?

Just to add i never use manual focus i find it takes too long

Its not so much the ability of the camera more the user, using a single focus point and learning to keep that on the subject will do it. These where taken with a P900 bridge camera using single point focus AFC and continuess shooting, practise is what does it more than the camera.

The panasonic fz82/80 would cover your needs from fairly distant birds to close up
  18. N

In serious need of focus help! FZ330 specific, but quite possibly applies to other bridge cameras.

Just taking Niels advice one step further i would try afc mode and let the camera run a few shots off it may help your keeper rate.

I would say come off all tracking type modes they are flakey at best and crap at worst, set some form of center focus point and stick with that for a while

    FZ80/FZ300/SX70 choice - any thoughts?

I used it as an example so greyed some out to show the crop. In the original image you have more pixels than you need to make the image size on your screen, if you crop some away (within reason) you will still have enough to give you the screen size. You need to be playing with it to start...

    FZ80/FZ300/SX70 choice - any thoughts?

No you start with the full image dont reduce pixel number you use the programs editing tool and put a square around the section you want to keep then crop it. Obviously, it has its limits but this is an example of extreme cropping.

    1.3 crop or not ?

Its a lot of years since i tried it when i had my D7200, from what i remember it makes no difference to focus speed.

    Beginner Camera and Lense

No it doesn't need another lens, which ever ones you look at make sure they have an EVF viewfinder as its better than working off the back screen,

    Beginner Camera and Lense

Hi not an easy question to answer, 300mm most of the time is pretty useless unless you are blessed with great field craft and can get very close to your subject, your budget is not enough to get you a decent DSLR and lens. The answer I think ties in with the thread above and I would say look at...
