    peregrine falcon problem

    Observers believe another female came in looking to take over her territory. We have been checking on the nesting box for some time and, since that incident, only a male peregrine has been in evidence. Perhaps the interloper moved on after the kill.

    FYI ... here's a pic of a Peregrine kill we came across a couple of days ago. There were three dead pigeons in the area .. one on a road, one high in a tower (we could see it through zoom lens) and this one. We're not sure why the Peregrine would have left three dead pigeons, but his behavior...

    The Little Egret & the Comorant

    Have observed similar behaviour in the past. Just recently at Ding Darling we saw a Little Blue Heron and Snowy Egret following a Double-Crested Cormorant as it swam about hunting fish. Whenever the Cormorant surfaced, it was a race between the Heron and Egret to be first on the scene. cheers, jim

    Wait it out ... I was out shooting last weekend when a male cardinal landed on a branch about 20 feet away (I was standing in the open at the time) ... got a few frames off before he left ... I stuck around for another hour before he showed up again. cheers, and good luck, jim

    Camoflauging camera and tripods

    If you do decide in favour of camo, check out the store at www.naturescapes.net. You'll find camo pads for select tripod legs, as well as camo for lenses. It's based in Pennsylvania. I've bought from them many times and recently purchased camo for my tripod and lens. cheers, jim

    Gitzo monopod/tripod

    I used the Wimberley on a Manfrotto with a centre column. However, I never extended the column. Since I purchased a bigger lens (translate that as heavier), I upgraded to a Gitzo 1325, which has a bigger load capacity. cheers, jim

    The attached pic has been on my website for some time, IDd by me as a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk. My wife has recently thrown some doubt my way ... she believes it to be a Rough-legged Hawk. Any thoughts?? Cheers, and thanks, jim

    I agree with John M's comments ... used my Bigma for several years until I acquired its big brother, the 300-800. Still use it occasionally. It's an exceptional lens. cheers, jim

    FYI ... Chris is the "interpretive naturalist" for the Arboretum at Ontario's University of Guelph. He has four titles out, dealing with species "of the Great Lakes Region and Eastern North America" -- Hawks And Owls. Warblers, Sparrows And Finches, Waterfowl. cheers, jim
