    Merry MACADAMIAS to the woodpeckers!

So I had this bag of going-stale macadamias. Not rancid, mind you. They simply were losing their fresh mac taste. I rinsed them in warm water to remove the salt and then placed them in a warm oven to dry them off. I then added a few inches of macadamia nuts to the nut feeder. Some of the...

Why have the cardinals disappeared, and are they coming back?

The cardinals have disappeared since I removed the feeders due to the eye disease. That was a few months back. Everything has been back to normal for months now, yet no cardinals! What's the deal? Is there something I'm missing?

Accordng to Mario Batali...RE: FIGPECKER, European Garden Warbler

I was watching an episode of Molto Mario and he stated that Sicilians eat/ate figpeckers! I tried to find some information or pictures online but only came up with the fact that Figpeckers are European garden warblers. It doesn't sound very appetizing to me, but apparently the birds are quite...

    Finch napping in feeder!!

There is one house finch who visits my feeder and naps in it. It is the cutest thing. This particular feeder (I have a few I rotate) has a rounded woven wicker bottom and bowed extensions, creating something similar to a basket. I think it is female, and sometimes I will stand there watching...

Feeding ducks at ponds or parks: YES or NO?

Anyone have a copy they're looking to unload? I'm poor and unemployed, so looking for a deal.

Quoth the Woodpecker: WHERE'S MY FOOD??!!

Because of the impending heat wave (with heat index up to 105), on Monday night I removed the suet feeder. Since the feeding station is now just outside the window, I figured I definitely did not want beef fat melting down the side of the house! I placed it in its ziploc bag and put it in the...

Trying a new superfeeder. Topflight Triple Tube. Anyone else use this?

Picked this up at Home Depot for $40. Previously very reluctant to pay more than $10 for a feeder, and spoiled by the excellent prices at the Christmas Tree Shop, I neglected to notice such feeders as this one. Here is a link to a listing at Amazon...

Sunflower hulls all over the place. HELP!

Are there any inventive folks out there who can help me think of something I could rig up underneath the feeder so as to avoid this? I placed a sunflower/safflower mix in a feeder just outside my kitchen window. It is incredibly successful and wildly popular. However, we now have sunflower...

Does temporarily removing feeders rid you of unwanted visitors?

I've read in a few books that, if you want to get rid of certain unwanted birds, to remove the feeders they like. Well, these parakeets like EVERYTHING. Should I temporarily remove all feeders? If so, for how long? Might they return in the future or will they have moved on to other sources?

Feral parakeets at feeders. Awful, Noisy, Mean and Greedy!

I was shocked to see 2 parakeets yesterday, and 4 today, consuming MASS quantities of seed. They have completely taken over the sunflower feeder, and the regulars are scared of them. I haven't even seen the blue jays since the keets came around. I chase them away each time I see them at the...

The squirrels have turned me into Carl Spackler. Here is the ONLY thing that works:

I will not even go into all of the tricks I have tried to prevent these glorified rodents from draining my feeders. I even posted about the red pepper flakes, which works to a degree. I have tried so many things that I have become the Carl Spackler of my backyard. Thus far, the only thing...

Where do you buy your supplies? Mix, feeders, etc?

I realize that this board is very international, but I'd like to know from which stores we all buy our supplies. Here in New England, we are lucky to have a store called Christmas Tree Shops (not a Christmas store). I find very good, durable, squirrel-proof feeders from $2.99 to $6.99. In...

Red Pepper Flakes as squirrel deterrent at your feeders

Mixing red pepper flakes with your mixed seed to deter squirrels...seems to work so far. The squirrels hate it! The birds either don't mind it, or they even like it. How much to mix in is a matter of judgment. Maybe 3/4 to 1 cup per 40 lb of seed. Also, I hear the chili flakes will kill any...
