I have been in touch with the former NSBC recorder, and he has informed me that that have been 33 records of Great Spotted Woodpecker in the clubs 40 year history. More than I thought, although still a scarce offshore bird. He believes that our bird will have been of Scandinavian origins, making...

    North Sea Thread

Before leaving the platform on Sunday, I found a clump of feathers that I hurriedly wrapped in a sheet of paper, and pocketed minutes before leaving. I only remembered them this morning, so took a photo and posted them on the Bird Identification pages of these fora. They have now been identified...

    North Sea Migrant

Many thanks Joern. I'd never have got that one.

    North Sea Migrant

That is red red (no blood) feathers, slightly brighter than the photo shows. Peregrine kill is a distinct possibility, as we have them on a regular basis. They quite often stay a day or two. Sparrowhawk seen last week. S-E and L-E Owls also often seen. Goshawk possible, so no shortage of stop...

    North Sea Migrant

I found this clump of feathers on a North Sea oil platform (approx 116 miles NE of Aberdeen) at the weekend. I am guessing some sort of migrant wader? The length of the feathers shown is 4 inches.

    Seafield to Kinghorn

Springtime is now in full flow at both the coastal strip and at the loch. Chiffchaffs have been here in force for a while, but this week they are being joined by both Blackcap and Willow Warbler. This morning at the Kinghorn end of the strip, I found a Lesser Whitethroat. Along the shoreline...

Just before leaving yesterday, a Woodpigeon turned up.

    North Sea Thread

I was out for the day on Thursday, but there was next to no bird activity. A few Gannet passing, a couple of gulls, and a dead Blackcap was all I could find. I returned yesterday, and had a much better day, although birds still noticeably scarce. In the morning, a couple of very distant...

    North Sea Thread

I was out on the platform on Saturday, and am pleased to be able to report the presence of a few birds. Firstly came a close encounter with a Carrion Crow. Shortly after that, a Sparrowhawk landed on a handrail very close to my position. Finally, the constant rain brought a smart looking male...

I've been going back through my records, and it seems that I was incorrect in saying that I had not come across P-F Gs at the platform. I have found that I have seen them on at least two occasions, including the one pictured in post #77, which I eventually remembered after my last post. Still a...

    Flight shot - Fife

Thanks. Must have just been the way the light was catching some of them.

    Flight shot - Fife

I got a glimpse of a flock of birds yesterday, before they dropped behind a screen of trees. There were a lot of Woodpigeon, but also a significant number of something else. Only got one shot of a couple of them, and thought Lapwing, but the wings appear to be pointed? Bottom and righthand birds...

    NZ Duck

Only got two photos before it disappeared into salt marsh. Both show blue speculum, but both from same angle.

    NZ Duck

I think I've worked this one out as being a hybrid Mallard x Grey Duck? Photo taken about a week ago on the Whakatane river, Bay of Plenty.

A couple of visits to my original platform this month have produced very little, but that is only to be expected, as we only spend a few hours onboard every week or two. This month however has seen Fulmar and Gannet added to the list, with the latter being noticeable in increasing numbers. Also...

    Mistle or Song thrush

Sorry, misread your post (#19). I knew my bird was a Mistle, but thought you were talking about Mistle, not Song.

    Mistle or Song thrush

This is one of three that turned up on my patch (Kinghorn, Fife) last week. Am I safe in saying that it is probably a British resident, based on the brownish back?

I had assumed that the second bird was just going to be a female or juvenile of the first. Here is a full view of it.

    Wallpaper

I have been asked to ID the bird pictured on some wallpaper. I'm guessing it is a true bird, and not an artist's flight of fancy, but it is not something I'm familiar with.

    Seafield to Kinghorn

Yesterday, I did a full tour of both loch and coastal areas of the patch. Despite it being a little cold, blustery and subdued, as you would expect at this time of year, there is still always something to see. Highlights at the loch were a Kingfisher that I finally managed to get a picture of...

    Seafield to Kinghorn

On Saturday, I returned to the Seafield coastal strip. There was not too much out of the ordinary, but good to see the Knot are still hanging about. Out on the Forth, the highlight was a small group of Common Scoter. Yesterday, at the loch, I found a Red-breasted Merganser. My first on this...

    Mergansers, Scotland

The sightings were 5 days apart. Because of the long range, I only gave each sighting a few minutes, concentrating on grabbing long range record shots for later ID. I suppose it is possible that they are different birds, and/or that there may be a pair with one being concealed each time.
