    Sorrento area - April 2022

Found a few useful posts on Birdforum prior to our visit to Sorrento this week - thanks to those who shared info. Hope these notes may be of use to others in the future. No idea what I might expect to see in the area in April, so I compiled a list of possibles from posts here and Naturetrek...

How to remove Velbon PH-157Q tripod head?

I'm struggling to remove my Velbon PH-157Q tripod head. I'm presuming plenty of folks here have done this. I'm probably being a bit thick, but I can't work out where to start. I can't find anything on YouTube, or other online articles. Whatever I try to unscrew, the head just keeps on turning...

    Birding in Worcestershire

After an hour at Woodrow to see the Wheatears (three this morning, 2M 1F), I had a lovely couple of hours around Chaddesley Wood. Plenty of birds around, but the most productive spot was the field immediately east of the wood, 15+ Meadow Pipit and a small group of Redwing/Fieldfare clinging on...

    Bittell Reservoirs and Hopwood area

I had similar on Friday afternoon about 3pm, from the canal side of Lower. Watched them for 15-20 mins, hoping to find all three species, and was successful. Mostly Sand Martin, 10+ House Martin and a couple of Swallow.

    Bittell Reservoirs and Hopwood area

Plenty of Grey Heron and a single Little Egret but nothing like Spoonbill when I was at Upper briefly about 9am.

    Bittell Reservoirs and Hopwood area

Water levels in Lower are back to normal. 3 Sand Martin over the moorings along the canal.

    Bittell Reservoirs and Hopwood area

Great White Egret on Upper this afternoon. Flew off south but appeared to drop down so may well be on Lower. Skylarks in the fields to the north, and a singing Chiffchaff along the road up to the old farm.

    Bartley reservoir

No sign of Pintail this afternoon, but Shag fishing off the dam. Sparrowhawk hunting over the horse paddocks and Raven over.

    Bittell Reservoirs and Hopwood area

Lower - Green Sandpiper still present 2.30pm Upper - White-fronted Goose reported at lunchtime, still present at 3.30pm, roosting along the reservoir edge. Not viewable from the dam, need to head for the footpath to the north of the reservoir. Upper absolutely full to the brim with water...

    Lifford Reservoir and nearby canals

A single Little Grebe still present late morning today. The other bird disappeared at the same time as the two Great Crested Grebes, when the reservoir was mostly frozen over last week. Hopefully it's moved on rather than perishing.

Trittiford mill pond and the dingles bird sightings

I wonder if the Bar-headed Goose is the Cannon Hill Park bird?

    Lifford Reservoir and nearby canals

Hi Maypole Birder. You must have been around Lifford at pretty much the same time as me yesterday. The two Little Grebe were still present yesterday morning, in addition to the species on your list. I recorded 40 species around the reservoir and the nearby canals, a good start to the year on...

    South Birmingham misc sightings

Photos posted on Twitter of a Great White Egret seen yesterday in Bournville Park (not by me). Over-wintering Blackcaps in our garden again in the last week - 2 males this year.

    Lifford Reservoir and nearby canals

They could well be the same birds. The remnants of a couple of fallen trees are creating some good habitat for them at present. Both birds still present this afternoon, along with a single male Pochard. My first Pochard at Lifford since Feb 2017, according to Birdtrack.

    Lifford Reservoir and nearby canals

2 Little Grebe at Lifford Reservoir mid-morning (Sat 19th Dec), my first record of this species at Lifford. 4 Cormorant also present, and 24 Tufted Duck.

Shenley Fields Lake - Weoley Castle

13 Shoveler and 4 Tufted Duck on this micro-lake yesterday morning. Very surprised at the Shoveler numbers.

    Kingfishers

You may well be right. Zooming in on Google Maps suggests the side channel goes under Bristol Road and into woodland immediately south of Edgbaston Pool, very close to the outflow channel from the Pool. Does anyone know that outflow channel? Good Dipper habitat?

    South Birmingham misc sightings

Black Redstart back on Cherington Road, Stirchley for at least its third winter. I don't know when it returned, but seen well by multiple observers this week. It was feeding happily in the drizzle on the wall outside the usual house around 9.15 this morning.

    Kingfishers

A single Dipper on the narrow side channel off the Bourn Brook behind the Dental Hospital around 9am this morning.

Shenley Fields Lake - Weoley Castle

1M 1F Shoveler, Grey Heron, 4 Tufted Duck this morning.

    Manor Farm Park, Northfield

Popped in this afternoon to see how much progress had been made with refilling the pool after the sluice work. This has been ongoing since March (I believe it may have started just before Lockdown 1 kicked in) but little sign that it's heading for completion. The sledging hill behind the pool...

    Bittell Reservoirs and Hopwood area

Never seen as many Little Grebe in one place as on Lower this afternoon. Must have been at least 15 gathered under the trees at the far end, and odd singles around in other areas too.

    Bittell Reservoirs and Hopwood area

Five gull species on Upper this afternoon - the obvious LBBG/Herring/BHG plus a single Common Gull and an adult YLG sat on a buoy close to the dam (as Josh mentioned above). Several very good candidates for juvenile YLG on the water too. Juvenile Linnet x2 in front of the sailing club...

Yes, that's as close a match as I've heard so far. Thank you.
