    Essex gull, UK

    I saw this gull this evening at long range in fading light. My first impression was too dark for herring so maybe yellow-legged, however a friend has pointed out it doesn't look that big.... Common gull is the obvious species but overall structure/bill just doesn't look right to me although...

    Cheap fat ball advice

    I usually spend £30-40 per month on bird food but finances have been a bit tough recently so I am trying to make some cuts so I've purchased a tub of 150 fat balls made by Dawn Chorus which were only £10.     White or Pied Wagtail?

    Seen today in Essex, England. Initially I though White as it was noticably paler than the other Pied Wags present. The only thing putting me off it the flanks but the pictures look darker than they were. Also the white on the primaries is quite thin which can indicate White. Opinions please?

    Bluethroat tick

    Visited Landguard nature reserve in Suffolk today and saw 2 Bluethroat (new tick), 3 Black Redstart and at least 2 very obliging Firecrest. With the slightly out of place Red Legged Partridge that was in front of me when I arrived all in all a good day!

    Opticron 8x32 SR.GA issue

    I have recently purchased a 2nd hand 8x32 SR.GA and the image quality and 3d effect is really nice. However I find it difficult to get a sharp focus because if I turn the wheel a fraction too far I have to go back further than expected. I think that this is due to some free play on the focus...
