"Too dumb" to use a Scope?

Sorry for the delay in replying. I got fed up with squinting and eventually getting ‘aching eyes’, and the ‘both eyes open’ technique never worked for me. the clamp round the eyepiece is from the Bushnell digiscoping kit. I drilled a small hole through the stalk that extends from the clamp...

"Too dumb" to use a Scope?

I suffered with the same one eye open / one eye shut thing so designed this. If you’re interested I can explain how to construct it

    Question on Tawny Owls

Thanks Cafe Birder, I wasn’t aware Jays did that. The only Jay sound I’m familiar with is the standard screech. And thanks again everyone for your input. I suppose if you’re out at night and you hear the full Tawny Owl call you’d know instantly whether it’s one solo or a pair of birds Due to...

    Question on Tawny Owls

Is it just a case of maybe both? As in sometimes the whole call is uttered by a single bird, sometimes it’s shared by two birds. Or is there a definitive rule

    Question on Tawny Owls

Thanks for your input everyone. I was always led to believe the calls/song was from two separate birds, as confirmed on Dominick Couzen’s Teach yourself birdsound tapes. It was just that this guy from the RSPB, an expert in bird sound, said the two owl thing was a myth. That’s one of the joys of...

    Question on Tawny Owls

Apologies if this question has been asked before but:- Regarding the ‘Kuwick!!...Hoo..hooooo’ calls of the Tawny Owl (excuse the crap phonetics), I was always led to believe (quantified by a bird/birding expert) that this was a two part call made by two different birds, the ‘Kuwick’ by one bird...

Where to watch birds -France (published by Helm) has a chapter on Brittany which lists the top 16 sites. It also covers all the Atlantic coast.

    Escaped Lynx killed - UK

Before citing my own personal experience with Lynx, can I say I don't like the idea of animals being shot when they could be tranquillised, and that I am in favour, generally, of re-introduction schemes. So... We (me, my wife, and our two sons) had driven up to Derbyshire for the day. On the way...

    ATX eyepiece button stuck!

I'm sorry but if buyers of the ATX system are paying thousands of pounds for equipment that is supposedly designed for rugged, all weather, all temperature, outside use, then a construction fault or frequent use or users not being careful are not excuses. These scopes are supposed to be the best...

Collins British Birds OR Collins BTO Guide to British Birds

BadgerGirl, if you're anything like me you probably skip the introduction part of books and dive straight in. DON'T do this with the Collins Bird Guide, the six page intro is gold dust to the beginner (as are the intro pages to Waders and Gulls found later in the book).

    ATX eyepiece button stuck!

I'm not familiar with the ATX, but... Maybe a small rubber suction / sucker cup? Those that fix signs people hang in the backs of cars (baby on board), kiddies bow and arrow sucker, suckers that fix to glass. That type of thing. Might not work but at least it won't affect the warranty.

    New Zeiss Victory SF !!!!!!

I have always had bad posture (due, I think to me being 6'1" and, in my growing days, therefore slouching to 'fit in' with my buddies). I also, despite being relatively fit, find viewing through binoculars constantly, quite literally a pain (it starts with a gnawing in my shoulders which soon...

    New Zeiss Victory SF !!!!!!

No worries. It was just something my son lectured me on concerning balanced posture. Looks like you've got it covered.

    New Zeiss Victory SF !!!!!!

GG, Genuine question. Between stopping to watch birds, do you walk round with one hand on your bins to stop them swinging back and forth?

Does Collins sell hardback books of Wild Mammals of Britain and Europe?

They did (my copy dates from 1993). It was a 312 page hardback by David Macdonald and Priscilla Barrett. It covers all of Britain and Europe, tells you everything you need to know, but is a little dated next to those black cover editions you mention. If Collins brings one out, I'll be grabbing it!

    New Zeiss Victory SF !!!!!!

Just as a formula1 car is so hypersensitive and precision balanced it would magnify our deficiencies, delayed reactions, and general judgement, were we to drive one, so I think, the top tier of binoculars are so good now, they show up our limitations. Unfortunately whereas each F1 cockpit is...

    New Zeiss Victory SF !!!!!!

"I was told in no uncertain terms that this was because they were HunTing binoculars and not for birders! I was also told that the marketing material imagery of HunTers etc (thankfully no dead animals as far as I could gather) was not appropriate for birders." How to screw company profits-...

Nikon Monarch HG wins 1st Place in Field and Stream test of 13 new Binoculars.

Posted all over the place on Birdforum time and again is Rule One, namely 'Before buying a pair of binocular, go and try them for yourself.' However, just by performing this very necessary act, are we not taking any glowing reviews of said binoculars 'with a pinch of salt'.

Nikon Monarch HG wins 1st Place in Field and Stream test of 13 new Binoculars.

My previous bins (Kowa 8.5x44) seemed to be built along the lines of a Centurion Tank. The MHG though far lighter feel no less robust. Worst case scenario (a drop onto rocky ground) and the magnesium alloy + rubber I reckon would do their job. Landing glass first? No amount of armouring will...

Nikon Monarch HG wins 1st Place in Field and Stream test of 13 new Binoculars.

Hermann, when you say 'I wasn't sure it would stand up to hard use in the field', do you mean is it robust enough physically, or are you talking about it lacking optically.
