    Hi, I found this spider in the garden last night, it stood out like a sore thumb with its 2 horns, I think from a quick reference to my spider guide it's Araneus angulatus, but I'm not certain and I think it's fairly uncommon. Can anyone confirm? Many thanks, Tom

    Thanks aeshna, just realised my 3 & 4 ID's were the wrong way around, just edited them. I have no idea how I skimmed over Tachystola acroxantha that many times and didn't spot it. I did consider Barred Red but thought the very faded cross lines didn't look angled enough, but looking at it again...

    Another micro Thumbed through the micro guide about 5 times trying to ID this, closest I can get is Ancylis upupana, and I don't think that's close enough!

    Thanks Max, I’ll have a look at which Cerceris sp. we get here when I have time. I presumed the smaller was a Male and larger was female so I wondered whether it was attempted mating, but the weevil threw me off, and then the way it forced them into the hole/burrow. Cheers, Tom

    Hi, I was on Aylesbeare RSPB reserve in Devon the other day, and witnessed a small wasp riding on the back of a larger wasp, carrying a weevil.... the smaller wasp was persistently smashing the larger wasp (with weevil) into the ground and wrestling with it, whilst another wasp was attacking...

    Hi, Having not seen either Small or Essex Skipper before (always Large, frustratingly) I'm unsure of an ID on these. I've looked online and the diagnostic feature is the underside of the antennae colour, so are these ID'able from these photos? I also see Essex Skipper is pretty rare down this...

    Thanks Rosaria, I've had quite a few Epiphyas posvittana in the garden so you might be right, usually they're much more obvious, and the size difference between male and female is striking. At first I thought, no way are 1 & 2 the same, but now I think you might be right on that! Cheers, Tom

    I asked my experienced ringing trainer about this a while ago, and if I remember correctly, he said from his own experience of Little Owl, he related it to the decline in Starlings, he would find lots of Starling corpses (I think he said specifically juveniles, but I can’t be sure) around nests...

    Firecrests and Black Redstarts this winter

    Although I haven’t done much birding this winter due to being too busy, I did find a Black Redstart in Downderry last week, so there’s at least 2 in the county!! Haven’t had a Firecrest either, but like I said i’ve not been out much.
