    Se 8x32

Hi Dries, Aren't they a bit bulky? I find my Nikon 7x35 porro ergonomically rather inconvenient when compared to an 8x32 roof...

    SF and HT 8X42

I do not really understand why binocular manufacturers do not offer customizing options such as different focus speeds, different eye cups or what ever. doesn't seem too difficult to realize... And at current prices of >2,2k not many people would have a problem with investing another couple of...

Why is it such a common problem now days for binoculars to have too much eye relief r

Thanks, Lee and Dennis. Yup, quite important and properly taken care of. Though I am not very precise in reading and typing answers, I tend to be extremely precise when tinkering ;)

Quite amazing isn't it that many of us have very reasonable demands, know what we want and still it is difficult to find the right binocular. Time for customization perhaps?

Why is it such a common problem now days for binoculars to have too much eye relief r

On my recently acquired (second hand) Bushnell, the eye cups extended only a meager 9mm above the lens. Buying used old bins does have the advantage that you don't need to be very careful with them. So, I took apart the eye-cup, which consisted of an aluminium cylinder that moves up and down via...

    Cheap binoculars to start

That is, again, a not so good choice of words from me. Sorry about that. I was kind of thinking along the lines of irony, sarcasm, or speaking metaphorically. Cheers

    Cheap binoculars to start

Some people are very straight forward, other people communicate more indirectly with subtle hidden messages. Instead of wondering whether someone was trying to pull my leg, I just ask. Avoids confusion. In another thread I spoke of "sun collimation" a sloppy term probably (although used on...

    Cheap binoculars to start

I really do not like chromatic abberation, slow focussers and glare. I can live with a smaller fov, occasional flare, ghosting or less then 90% transmission. If you are aiming at a "hidden joke" let me know. I am not the quickest at picking these up ;)

    Cheap binoculars to start

I agree with that. I really enjoyed my entry/ mid range roof prism bin. Sure, it was not the best, but I learned what I could live with in a binocular and what I really did not want in a premium binocular.

    Cheap binoculars to start

I have an old Nikon Action 7x35 and do not really like it. Only the centre is sharp and I find the 7x magnification (or perhaps in reality even 6.5) to be rather low. Perhaps the newer EX model is better in that regard. There are many 8x porro's that can be bought for less than 80€. Maybe the...

Wow, that is about 35% deviation from spec!

    Eden XP 10x56

Ah, Yes. Re-reading it I see what you mean. Wheel too smooth-ribbed, but you could not find, a wobbly focus wheel with roughness or free play. :brains:

    Eden XP 10x56

Nice write up, again, Chris! Comparing binoculars can be quite entertaining, isn't it? I tried the 8x42 some time ago. They did seem like good value for money, but I noticed quite a bit of CA with them. Other than that, I liked it's smoothly and fast operating focus wheel. Maybe you just had...

Why is it such a common problem now days for binoculars to have too much eye relief r

Maybe a bit far fetched, but could it be that it is some sort of sales trick? One might imagine that the closer the eye gets to the image, the more immersive it seems...? Or is it our eyes... It is a fact that as we get older we have more problems dealing with the converging rays coming from the...

Ewww bugger... it didn't work. Maybe I should try it naked next time... Bloody boring fall/ winter isn't it. Nothing but fog and grey skies for months in a row |8||

I will try my magic dance. Maybe it will work. You should know in an hour or so 3:-)

The correct terminology would probably be "Sun images method for checking alignment of binoculars" https://sites.google.com/site/rchamon/home/sun-images-method-for-collimation-of-binoculars

    Noctivid 10x42. finally a nearly perfect 10

Might be the case indeed. Is there any other way to test? Sun collimation perhaps? Or would that indicate an error in field stops again?

That makes 0.14 deg and 8 arcminutes.

    Noctivid 10x42. finally a nearly perfect 10

Robert, if you take a tape measure and measure the vertical offset and horizontal distance to the object, with some trigonometry you can calculate the discollimation in degrees or arcminutes. If you let us know the distances I can do it for you. Bill Cook has written about acceptable tolerances...

    "Immersion" - What Price Glory?

Just to clarify: in a Dutch coffee shop, they don't serve much coffee, although you could get coffee if you really want to. The coffee shop business is mainly about that green smelly weedy "stuff" some like to smoke :smoke: Beautiful, bright vibrant colors tend to enhance my viewing/immersion...

    white spots on prism

I was able to try a Bynolyt Tern 8x32 today and I must say that I was impressed. Ok, it was not as bright and contrasty as the Eschenbach with it's 42mm objectives and dielectric prism coatings, but the BT image was still pretty clear, it handles glare very well, better than the EB, has a large...

Why No More High End Porros?

I just checked and minimum focus distance is 3,5m to 4m (for the 7x and the 10x respectively). Personally I find such a minimum focus distance fine for birding. If any closer, than I prefer reading glasses ;)
